Samsung Self Repair Assistant on Unsupported Devices (Rootless Method)

Updated guide – no root required


Disclaimer

  • This guide is not a beginner step-by-step tutorial. Basic familiarity with ADB and Android system settings is assumed.
  • No root or bootloader unlocking is required for this updated method.
  • While this approach avoids flashing or data wipes, it still relies on undocumented behavior and is not officially supported by Samsung.
  • Proceed at your own risk.

Tested Functionality

  • Hall IC calibration confirmed working on Galaxy Fold 4 (F936U).
  • Other functions (e.g., battery calibration) have not been fully tested.

Background & Rationale

Samsung’s Self Repair Assistant app enforces a device compatibility check that prevents it from launching on older Fold/Flip models.

Originally, bypassing this required root access to manually start the app’s internal activity (GcWelcomeActivity).

However, thanks to recent findings, it turns out Samsung allows private / hidden apps to be launched through system-level shortcuts — specifically by abusing the Side Key double-press configuration, which runs with elevated privileges.

This makes it possible to launch the app without root, Magisk, or firmware modification.

Requirements

  • Samsung device running OneUI
  • ADB installed on your computer
  • Internet access (for Samsung Account login)

Instructions (Rootless Method)

1. Install Samsung Self Repair Assistant

  • Download the APK with package ID:

    com.samsung.android.app.repaircal
    
  • APKMirror or similar repositories work fine

  • Tested with version 2.0.17

Install the APK normally.


2. Install SetEdit


3. Grant SetEdit Secure Settings Permission

Connect your phone to your PC and run:

adb shell pm grant by4a.setedit22 android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

This allows SetEdit to modify system-level configuration values.


4. Configure Side Key Double-Press

On your phone:

  1. Open Settings → Advanced features → Side key

  2. Set Double press to:

    • Open app
    • Select Samsung Self Repair Assistant

5. Override the Side Key Target Activity

  1. Open SetEdit

  2. Switch to the Global Table

  3. Find the key:

    function_key_config_doublepress_value
    
  4. Change its value to:

    com.samsung.android.app.repaircal/com.samsung.android.app.repaircal.GcWelcomeActivity
    
  5. Save the change

This forces the Side Key to launch the app’s internal entry activity, bypassing the compatibility check.


6. Launch the App

  • Double‑press the Power / Side Key
  • The Self Repair Assistant should now launch normally
  • Log in with your Samsung Account when prompted

Notes & Limitations

  • This method relies on Samsung-specific behavior and may break with future OneUI updates
  • The app may still block certain features depending on device model
  • No APK modification or resigning is required

Conclusion

This rootless approach is simpler, safer, and fully reversible compared to the original Magisk-based method.

It significantly lowers the barrier for using Samsung’s Self Repair tools on older Fold / Flip devices and aligns well with the Right to Repair philosophy.

If Samsung ever removes this loophole, root-based launching may still remain a fallback — but for now, this is by far the cleanest solution.

For S10/S10+, it's impossible to find Bixby button custom action for single or double press. I've tried to replace the launch function for the double press on power button (which is for open camera by default) but it did not work. Then I found out that you can replace the launch argument for the lock screen bubbles (in bottom corners) with custom one in SetEdit. Worked flawlessly with the com.samsung.android.app.repaircal/com.samsung.android.app.repaircal.GcWelcomeActivity being placed in one of the slots.

How do you this? I have a S10e and don´t find function_key_config_doublepress_value on SetEdit

Double press doesn't work. The lockscreen shortcuts do. I think it's found in the System Table, a single row containing two paths, for example if you have set a dialer and flashlight shortcuts on the bottom corners of the lock screen the row should contain two paths with the corresponding shortcuts and there where .../1/... in between. You just swap out the flashlight shortcut with the ....WelcomeActivity path and then go to your lockscreen, launch the shortcut (it should be with the Self Repair logo) and then unlock your phone when prompted and it should work.

Nice, that´s work for me on my S10e

just tested on S20FE G781 android 13 and on double press side key the system display "device not supported" same as app started manually, permisions for setEdit set via adb and line under "value" added

Big thanks!!! I succesfully calibrated battery on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. It was necessary to scan qr code from new battery. "adb shell dumpsys battery" shows that mSavedBatteryAsoc and mSavedBatteryUsage was reset. It's ridiculous that samsung is blocking app and says that phone is unsupported.

Battery calibration also works on my f936u. Since I have already installed the new battery into my phone, I just scanned the QR code of my old battery. Given of my battery life now, I'm pretty sure it calibrated the capacity.

For those as dumb as me: I had the issue that it wouldn't open in a Fold4, replaced the screen and needed to calibrate the magnets/hall ic. I was downloading and apk mirror from Google. Turns out you can go directly to Samsung self repair site and there is an option to download the correct apk for your model. Was incredible easy and worked after that

Just made the mistake this morning to update the phone to android 16... It's seems not compatible anymore sadly

EDIT : I was wrong, you can go to the self repair app by going to samsung's website !!!

Thanks to BCG-Car! My phone is a Samsung Galaxy A73 5G, Thai region. At first, I thought that the “Device not supported” message might be caused by a regional restriction. So, I tried downloading the APK by entering the model as Samsung Galaxy A71 instead, and it worked! I was able to calibrate new battery.
