I don't often reply to these, but as a privacy and security advocate, I need to level with you.
Facebook as a company has built some awesome things, I have a lot of respect for the React Team and the FP push at FB.
That being said, Facebook is a privacy and security destroying cancer.
Using Facebook trains unsafe behavior, because sharing information exposes users to attacks which would otherwise be more difficult to pull off. In addition, thanks to the 3rd Party doctrine, anything shared on Facebook can be used against you at some point in the future, and you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.
People who take online security seriously do not have Facebook accounts, or if they do, the accounts are entirely fake. I'm sure the security devs make plenty of money more than they would working for the FBI, DEA or NSA... and its reasonable considering they work for all 3 at once, and many others (foreign governments, and police among them).
Smart people who work at NSA do not have Facebook accounts. They laughed at me when I asked.
Smart people who don't want to be spied on, have their relationships exploited, or their emotions manipulated do not have Facebook accounts.
Since you work at Facebook, you probably know that social engineering attacks are more successful when they come from people you trust. Imagine if this message came from a close friend. You can probably tell I'm not a friend, because I have not read all your friends Facebook posts to match their writing style, but if I worked at Facebook, thats something I could help you build : )
When you use Facebook, you are asking for advertisers and hackers to exploit your trusted relationships. Its an indefensible position for risk averse individuals. Or those who care about the online safety of others.
There are people who go sky diving, swim in dirty water, or eat street food. Each exposes him or herself to risk, many are aware of the risks. I honestly believe most Facebook users have no idea of the risks that come with using the product.
Imagine you work for a Pharma company which sells a drug for managing type II Diabetes. Then you learn the drug has very poor performance compared to other drugs, and its more expensive, and people are dying. But there are lots of people convinced it works, some are even addicted to it, despite the negative results, the drug remains profitable and easy to sell, despite rising statistics related to abuse and harm.
At some point, you have to realize that even though you believe in the company and the people and maybe even the mission, you cannot keep selling poison to people and sleep well at night.
If I'm the first person to explain this, I won't be the last.
Heck, there are people who still smoke despite knowing that it causes Cancer.
Facebook is a social cancer, an evil company built with the best of intentions by brilliant and kind people.
I'm glad you reached out, If you disagree and believe that Facebook makes people safer, and the world a better place, please argue your case.
