There is a very big gap in the /vg/station13 community due to the different maps and their different quality levels. The most picked map however, is Box Station.
Box Station has existed for ages and is the most used map for a lot of code bases which stem from TG originally. However I do not believe it aged well. A lot of issues have begun to arise which would take a ton of work to fix and require redoing entire departments. This Gist details those issue.
Box hasn't ages well, and as a result there are poorly mapped in areas around the place. Here are some examples:
- Auxiliary Engineering.
- Mechanics. Too small.
- Paramedic with that weird nook for the morgue.
- Science shuttle.
- Telecomms.
- Auxiliary arrivals docking.
- Security is too much of a peninsula.
- Too little maintenance, areas with maintenance are poorly tacked on (see area above chapel).
Yeah, it's bad.
This is for poor design which can't be fixed without redoing entire departments.
Inability to connect science and medbay into medsci through chemistry. Chemistry and science bring connected is a good idea game design wise and would add a lot, especially if we get a better Chem system. This is a severe game design issue which is directly blocked by the maps, but the community will not tolerate it being fixed.
Chemistry would have to be moved to somewhere between robotics and paramedics, but a hallway to connect it to science is not feasible. And even the morgue and genetics will need to be moved, but it can't be moved anywhere decently without dropping the chef and chaplain's morgue access. It gets even worse when we try to make genetics nicer and more connected to science (see Midaychi's suggestions on the issue tracker)
