The tricky thing here is that you’re running a “script” that runs top to bottom and then finishes, but async code relies on some mechanism where async work is scheduled and then later, when it is finished, the result is processed. This is usually done using a RunLoop so the solution here is to just run a RunLoop forever and find another condition that terminates the process. In this case, that condition would be when all the contacts have been processed, i.e. when a result or error was returned for each of them.

What you want to do is to basically wrap all of your code into one function e.g. named main and then schedule that on the RunLoop, then run the RunLoop. That is:

func main() {
    let arguments = Array(CommandLine.arguments.dropFirst())
    // …
    } catch {
        NSLog("Failed to fetch contact, error: \(error)")
    }
}

RunLoop.main.perform {
    main()
}
RunLoop.main.run()

Then, you have to keep track of every contact for which you fire up a lookup by putting it e.g. in a Set and whenever that lookup finishes (with success or failure), you remove it from that Set. (You’ll have to be careful that this Set is not accessed from multiple threads/queues concurrently and the easiest way to do that is by only accessing it on the main thread.) When the Set is empty, you’re done, your script should output the JSON and then quit using exit(0). This means you’ll have to restructure your code a bit to move the last step (converting to JSON and printing it).

GitHub didn’t let me fork this gist, so I created a new one with the mentioned changes here: https://gist.github.com/marcomasser/d9752544babd3d0a0179ee3c8ac8b8d6

Note that it does run, but it doesn’t seem to get the locations, but I didn’t debug it a lot.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Ah, and a tip: You can do create a new folder, do a swift package init in Terminal and then put your script in there and name it main.swift. Then, change the Package.swift to the following:

import PackageDescription

let package = Package(
    name: "nearbyContacts",
    platforms: [.macOS(.v11)],
    products: [
        // Products define the executables and libraries a package produces, and make them visible to other packages.
        .executable(
            name: "nearbyContacts",
            targets: ["nearbyContacts"]),
    ],
    dependencies: [
        // Dependencies declare other packages that this package depends on.
        // .package(url: /* package url */, from: "1.0.0"),
    ],
    targets: [
        // Targets are the basic building blocks of a package. A target can define a module or a test suite.
        // Targets can depend on other targets in this package, and on products in packages this package depends on.
        .executableTarget(
            name: "nearbyContacts",
            dependencies: [])
    ]
)

This will then allow you to run this script directly in Xcode so you can use breakpoints and the debugger, which might help a lot when debugging this.

I can check later, but did you name the file main.swift?

I did.

Strange. Here’s how it should look when it works. The code here already contains the changes I mentioned, but again, the lookup seems to fail for the argument.

(This isn’t actually a video. GitHub doesn’t seem to allow .zip files here, so just download it and rename it to .zip 🙃)

Thanks. Now I see my mistake. I did not understand that main.swift needed to be in "Sources/…"

Ah, right. I forgot to mention that. Sorry about that.

No worries. Glad it works. First time using a debugger ;) I set a breakpoint at line 151 and got "No debug session". On line 141 there are results … I can actually quicklook the coordinates. So it seems like the second getCoordinates is a problem somehow?
