VPN (OpenVPN) server and clients setup πŸš‚πŸš‡πŸ˜€

This gist give all the steps in order to build a VPN (OpenVPN) network with server and clients (automatic generation for clients certificates). πŸ˜€

Server configuration

With Debian/Ubuntu server.

Packages installation

$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install linux-patch-grsecurity2   ## GRsecurity kernel patch install
$ apt-get install openvpn                   ## OpenVPN install

Generate certificates

Copy the easy-rsa sample folder into /etc/openvpn

$ cp -R /usr/share/doc/openvpn/examples/easy-rsa /etc/openvpn

Edit the /etc/openvpn/vars config file

Mark: Leave the password blank in order to allow the auto start of the service. In the following part any password will be provided for each creation of certificates.

Clients configuration

With Debian/Ubuntu server.

Create the /etc/openvpn/client.conf file.

Security

The goal is to don't allow login as root

$ apt-get install sudo                      ## On Debian
$ adduser acme
$ usermod -G acme,sudo acme

Change permitrootlogin yes to permitrootlogin no in theΒ /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and restart ssh with /etc/init.d/ssh restart.

Generate automatic certificates for clients

$ adduser vpngetcertificate1234

Use make_chroot_jail.sh for chroot this user (eg. http://www.fuschlberger.net/programs/ssh-scp-sftp-chroot-jail/)

$ make_chroot_jail.sh vpngetcertificate1234

Mark: Add this info /usr/bin/openssl /bin/grep /bin/chmod /bin/touch on line 119 of the script.

$ mv -R /etc/openvpn/easy-rsa/ /home/jail/home/vpngetcertificate1234/

Replace export EASY_RSA="'pwd' by export EASY_RSA="/home/vpngetcertif/easy-rsa" in the var config file.

Replace "$EASY_RSA/pkitool" --interact $* by "$EASY_RSA/pkitool" $* in the build-key scritp.

We can now build certificates for clients with the following command:

$ ssh [email protected] "source easy-rsa/vars; ./easy-rsa/build-key client_name"
$ scp [email protected]:~/easy-rsa/keys/client_name.crt /etc/openvpn
$ scp [email protected]:~/easy-rsa/keys/client_name.key /etc/openvpn

Install new VPN client

Exec the script file $ ./install.sh NewClientName

#/bin/bash

apt-get install openvpn     ## Installation of OpenVPN using apt

mkdir -p /etc/openvpn/keys  ## Creation of a directory for the certificates

### We connect to the VPN server using the vpngetcertif user to generate a certificate for the new client.
### A test is made to know if a certificate for this client name has already been created...
