A small list I put together of things I like to have when I'm traveling anywhere in a car.

Standard vehicle equipment:

  • Simple Cigarette lighter powered airpump. These things are super helpful.
  • Jumpstarter kit for dead battery. Good for up to 5-10 jumps before recharging.
  • Tool bag, (Harbor freight has some great kits, or you can make your own)
  • Tire Patch kit.
  • Large trash bags.
  • general purpose flares.
  • 1000+ lumen flashlight/headlamp.
  • Medical/trauma kit.
  • Radio (In my case, I'm using my Ham radio setup, but I also have a cheap baeofang, programmed for NOAA channels).
  • Water *Snacks (Stored in backpack) *Sleeping bag + blanket

Vehicle bugout list: Hydration and food:

  • 72HR (approx) MOLLE rigged surplus backpack.
  • 3.5L hydration pack. (Stored Empty)
  • 15L water, stored in bottles. (Realistically I won't carry this much, probably just enough to fill my hydration bladder + maybe 3 bottles, but I live in a HOT climate).
  • Water purification tablets.
  • canned vegetables, canned beans (I like bushes baked beans), jerky. Depending on the season, I may risk canned fish as well. During the summer months it's a no go.
  • Protein bars and crackers.
  • Fruit snacks.

Clothing/weather gear:

  • Rain jacket.
  • Waterproof BDU's (From amazon, good quality and extremely comfortable stuff)
  • Full change of clothes to match BDU's: Socks, tshirts, longsleeves. (Where I live, the climate is normally hot, rarely gets colder than 50F).
  • Running/Walking shoes & boots. (I usually have these in my car regardless)
  • Sunglasses + spare readers.
  • Woobie.
  • Boonie hat & baseball cap.

Utilities:

  • $350 cash, small denominations.
  • Very basic navigation equipment, compass, map of the general area within 500+ miles, if I'm exceeding this distance, I'll plan accordingly.
  • Paracord
  • Large ziploc bags (20-30 or so)
  • Motrin/tylenol/aleve.
  • 6 spare magazines of 9MM. (17rnd, if applicable to your state or country)
  • 3 40RND magazines of .223/556. (This is only a benefit to me if I happen to have my rifle with me that day)
  • Pack of AA, AAA, and TLR-1/streamlight batteries.
  • USB powerpack from anker + USB-C/MicroUSB/Lightinging cables.
  • Kershaw all purpose utility knife and fixed blade ESSE, multi tool from leatherman.
  • Streamlight flashlight.
  • Bugspray & bear spray.
  • RiteinRain notebook + pens & pencils
  • 1-2 of my favorite books.
