#first seen here: http://www.snip2code.com/Snippet/63701/Ansible-task-to-install-nvm-and-node
# Here is how to install nvm and node in an Ansible task.
# I tried a bunch of different things, and as usual it's simple, but you have to get it right.
# The important part is that you have to shell with /bin/bash -c and source nvm.sh

Setup Facebook app to test authentication locally (aka, setting up App Domain)

Note: I had issues with setting up my Facebook app so authentication would work. I'd receive the error at the bottom, and it took me a while to figure out what was wrong

Here are the steps I took:

  • Go to http://developers.facebook.com/, create, and setup your app
  • When inside the dashboard, click "Settings"
  • Click "Add Platform"
  • Choose website (for authentication via the web app)
  • Add http://localhost:3000/ as "Site URL" (and "Mobile URL" if necessary)
  • Add localhost to "App Domains" above

This is a sample of how to send some information to logstash via the TCP input from node.js or python.

This is a sample of how to send some information to logstash via the TCP input in nodejs or python. It assumes the logstash host is on 10.10.10.100 and the TCP listening input is 9563.

The logstash.conf should look something like the sample file.

The log message should be a stringified JSON object with the log message in the @message field.

To use, run the node script node sendMessageToLogstash.js, or the python script python sendMessageToLogstash.js

Get the share counts from various APIs

Share Counts

I have always struggled with getting all the various share buttons from Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, etc to align correctly and to not look like a tacky explosion of buttons. Seeing a number of sites rolling their own share buttons with counts, for example The Next Web I decided to look into the various APIs on how to simply return the share count.

If you want to roll up all of these into a single jQuery plugin check out Sharrre

Many of these API calls and methods are undocumented, so anticipate that they will change in the future. Also, if you are planning on rolling these out across a site I would recommend creating a simple endpoint that periodically caches results from all of the APIs so that you are not overloading the services will requests.
