❔ Things to consider

Custom ROMs

Custom ROMs allow you to breath a new life into your smartphone. Whether you want customizability or simplicity, completely ditch Google software or be more like Pixels, there's likely something for you.

Unfortunately, not all devices have custom ROMs, and if yours does, this likely comes at a cost: not working apps (primarily banking ones), or inability to pay with Wallet via NFC. This can be worked around, but be aware that workaround may break at any point due to Google's hostile behavior. If this is a concern for you and you'd rather not play a cat-and-mouse game with Google, consider debloating instead.

Otherwise, you may look up your device model on XDA Forums (ENG), 4pda (RUS), or generally over the Internet (YouTube, Telegram) to see what's available.

Debloating

Rooting

Root lets you have admin access to your device. Thus, if you don't need features that would require such power, don't bother. Stock Android is great as is!

There are multiple ways to root your device. For modern devices, the popular choices are KernelSU [GitHub] / KernelSU Next [GitHub], Magisk [GitHub], and APatch [GitHub]. It's up to you whichever you prefer.

Popular app patches/mods

  • ReVanced Patches [Web]
    A plethora of mods for popular apps, including YouTube (remove adds, skip sponsored blocks, return dislikes, amoled theme, swipe controls, background playback, miniplayer without Premium, etc.), YouTube Music, Spotify, Google Photos (unlimited storage), and so much more!

  • Twitch — PurpleTV [Telegram]
    AdBlock, auto clicker for channel points, chat tweaks (view banned messages, history, floating chat…), etc.

  • Instagram — MyInsta [Web] [Telegram]
    Get rid of ads, download media, view photos in better quality, and more!

  • TikTok — TikTok Mod [Telegram]
    Useful if you want to change your region on-the-go (or bypass region restrictions) without changing sim card. Comes with other features like removing ads, bypassing many restrictions, downloading without watermark, saving as GIF, enabling rewind on any video.
    I advise to stick with ReVanced patches unless you want to change the region. And please, don't waste too much of your precious time into doom scrolling :)

  • Telegram — Nagram [Telegram]
    Many little nitpicks, everything is configurable! Change the default tab, confirm sending video/voice messages, send comment after forwarding, etc.

General app recommendations

Miscellaneous / General purpose apps

  • Camera apps
    Camera apps are opinionated, try out different ones (GCam, Leika, etc.) & configurations that are available for your device. May your photo and video quality thrive!

  • MiXplorer [Web] [Google Play]
    File explorer. Supports root and many cloud storages. Available for free on the web site.

  • 1DM [Google Play] / 1DM+ [Paid] [Google Play]
    Download manager for files, torrents, streamed media, etc.

  • Firefox [Google Play] / Firefox Nightly [Google Play]
    Allows installing extensions. Has other nice features like support for external download managers.
    Tip: Nightly version of Firefox allows installing any addon [Web] via Collections.

  • ▪️ AdGuard [Web]
    System-wide ad blocker. Usable for free, supports automation, has proxy mode (including Orbot (Tor) [Web] [Google Play] integration).
    If your device is rooted, you may install AdGuard Certificate [GitHub] module to block ads in apps that do not trust the user certificates. For non-rooted devices, Firefox has this opt-in.
    Granting root to the AdGuard itself also allows using it in a system-wide proxy mode instead of VPN, allowing other apps to utilize the latter.

  • ▪️ AdAway [Web] [GitHub]
    Another ad-blocking solution. There are plenty of filters to choose from, e.g., Energized Protection [GitHub].
    If rooted, you may install bindhosts [GitHub] to work without the need in local VPN.

  • Tailscale [Web] [Google Play]
    Neafty VPN that allows you devices to securely communicate with each other while being on different networks, for free!
    As an example use-case, you may use scrcpy (or any other app!) to share your screen to your PC using ADB over Wi-Fi while your phone is using a carrier network / is on a different Wi-Fi network.

  • Obsidian [Web] [Google Play]
    Multi-platform note taking app.
    Uses markdown syntax, has extensive plugin support.
    You can setup a free sync between devices using Syncthing and/or, optionally, sync to a git repo (e.g., on GitHub), or a cloud storage of your choice.

  • Tasker [Paid] [Web] [Google Play]
    Ultimate device automation! Supports rendering scenes and widgets as well.
    There's a trial version on the app's website.

  • Kustom apps [Google Play]
    Making custom wallpapers and widgets.

  • Tap, Tap [GitHub]
    Quick Tap for any phone: perform an action when double (or tripple) tapping your phone's back. Supports performing Tasker actions!

  • Popup Widget [Paid] [Google Play]
    Save home screen space by using popup widgets.

  • LinkSheet [GitHub]
    Pre-Android 12 system link handling behavior, with extras.

  • EweSticker [GitHub] [Google Play]
    Keyboard for custom stickers.

  • System UI Tuner [GitHub] [Google Play]
    Access to hidden System UI settings, in case they are missing from Settings (e.g., enabling seconds in status bar's clock), might not work on heavily modified ROMs.

  • Touch The Notch [Paid] [Google Play]
    Perform an action on touching/swiping the camera cutout (notch). Supports performing Tasker actions!

    Theming engine. Unfortunately, Google made it basically "impossible" to theme, so it's pretty much dead. Still, it works, and you may find niche communities (e.g., in Telegram) if you're interested.
