Using ansible to install Java on an ec2 box running in the cloud

I am writing this down so I don't forget. I started this task but had to stop a few times, and then remember where I left off and at some point, others will need to know how to get started.

Install ansible

brew install ansible

Install Amazon EC2 Ansible integration tool

Route Docker Logs to ELK Stack
  • With Docker 1.8.0 shipped new log-driver for GELF via UDP, this means that the logs from Docker Container(s) can be shipped directly to the ELK stack for further analysis.
  • This tutorial will illustrate how to use the GELF log-driver with Docker engine.
  • Step 1: Setup ELK Stack:
    • docker run -d --name es elasticsearch
    • docker run -d --name logstash --link es:elasticsearch logstash -v /tmp/logstash.conf:/config-dir/logstash.conf logstash logstash -f /config-dir/logstash.conf
    • Note the config for Logstash can be found at this link
    • docker run --link es:elasticsearch -d kibana
  • Once the ELK stack is up now let's fire up our nginx container which ships its logs to ELK stack.
  • LOGSTASH_ADDRESS=$(docker inspect --format '{{ .NetworkSettings.IPAddress }}' logstash)
  • `docker run -d --net=host --log-driver=gelf --log-opt gelf-address=u

Get the value of an EC2 instance's tag
#!/usr/bin/env bash
#
# Get the value of a tag for a running EC2 instance.
#
# This can be useful within bootstrapping scripts ("user-data").
#
# Note the EC3 instance needs to have an IAM role that lets it read tags. The policy
# JSON for this looks like:
#
# {
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
import socket
import os
print("Connecting...")
if os.path.exists("/tmp/python_unix_sockets_example"):
client = socket.socket(socket.AF_UNIX, socket.SOCK_DGRAM)
client.connect("/tmp/python_unix_sockets_example")
print("Ready.")
print("Ctrl-C to quit.")

Minimum IAM policy required by AWS for Packer to do its thing. https://github.com/mitchellh/packer Permissions are broken out by API functionality and a resource array has been defined with a wild card for each group. For tighter security resource level permissions can be applied per this documentation: http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2013/07/resourc…
