RailsBridge Cape Town warm-up exercise

Hello!

We hope you're looking forward to this weekend's RailsBridge as much as we are. :)

Before the end of the day on Thursday, please look at the questions below and reply to this mail with your answers. We'll be discussing them at the workshop.

  • What are three things you already know about programming?
  • What do you plan to do with what you learn?

AlterConf speaker template
AlterConf <http://alterconf.com> is a traveling conference series focused on moving the discussions around diversity in tech & gaming industry beyond a 101 level. We've found the industries, much like larger society, want to artificially limit the discourse around topics of social justice. All of our speakers are marginalized people speaking from their own experience and expertise. We boast an incredibly diverse list of speakers with an amazingly wide variety of topics: alterconf.com/talks <http://alterconf.com/talks>
Every decision we make for AlterConf works to re-center marginalized people in our spaces - we offer free childcare, healthy meals sensitive to dietary and religious restrictions, live captioning and sign language interpreters, accessible venues on accessible public transit, sliding scale ticket prices starting at free, and accessible gender neutral bathrooms. We pay all of our speakers and freelancers because marginalized people are so often asked to do this work for free or for very little mo

Chicken and Prawn hot pot

Chicken and Prawn hot pot

Heavily inspired by the Wagamama version.

chicken-and-prawn-hot-pot

  • Make some stock soupy stuff (chicken works well).
  • Throw some sake (a big glug), soy sauce (a small glug) into a pot with the soup and bring it to the boil.
  • Add a small amount of cubed chicken pieces and let the soup simmer for a couple of minutes, until the chicken is looking good.
  • Add some shiitake mushrooms (and other weird ones if you got them) and udon noodles. Simmer for a couple more minutes.

Chicken curry noodles

Chicken curry noodles

Kinda like a remix of a Khao soi. Has a medium heat, with a long, slow, burn. :)

The Dish

  • Stir fry some medium-sized cubes of chicken (thighs work best) with a glut of light soy until it's cooked, then set it aside.
  • Stir fry some thick-ish courgettes rounds and some medium-sized diced aubergine until they're golden brown. You should have about equal parts chicken, courgette, and aubergine.

Spiced seafood with wide noodles

Spiced seafood with wide noodles

Heavily "inspired by" Wagamama's spiced mussels with wide rice noodle dish. Noms!

The Dish

  • Cook something wide and noodle-y, drain and set it aside. Wide rice noodles are best, but linguine or tagliatelle work well too.

Moyashi Soba (without the moyashi or the soba)

Moyashi Soba

(without the moyashi or the soba) (so, i guess, just "veggie stir fry")

Based on Wagamama's Moyashi Soba recipe, but with the moyashi (beansprouts) or the soba (noodles). Erm... yeah.

moyashi-soba

  • Fry some peeled and finely chopped garlic until it starts to golden.
  • Add the veggies:

Raw Salad

The Wagamama Salad Dressing

  • Finely chop a few shallots, or a bit of red onion.
  • Grab a stick of ginger about 3 cm long and peel and grate it.
  • Peel and finely chop 2 cloves of garlic.
  • Mix the above with:
