                        <p><span>We hear the phrases &ldquo;critical thinking&rdquo; and &ldquo;problem-solving&rdquo; in every discipline and in a multitude of contexts. During your coursework, you will learn how to determine what kind of primary and secondary sources are appropriate for different projects in a variety of disciplines, where to locate these resources, and how to evaluate them. You will also learn what kind of processes are used to analyze and problem-solve in these disciplines. How do you analyze literature, scientific data, or an ethical dilemma? How do you approach a problem as a biologist, sociologist, or philosopher? This skill set is crucial whether you are tasked with improving a product, writing an executive summary for a report, or drafting a new textbook chapter.</span></p>

It is crucial that you can express yourself, whether you are asked to give an update to a committee or write a memo about a recent conference you attended, and adjust for a variety of audiences.</span></p>
                        <p><span>Public Speaking and class presentations will help you be more confident and articulate when you present your ideas or opinions. How might you persuade someone to adapt your idea or change a policy? Additionally, English Composition and the &ldquo;W&rdquo; (writing intensive) courses that you take, as well as many others, will help hone your writing skills.&nbsp;</span></p>

Some professions encourage or require collaboration more than others, or perhaps only in certain aspects or at certain phases of a project, but you will work with others, as colleagues or clients. It takes practice to understand where your own strengths and weaknesses lie, as well as how to work effectively with others. When you complete a project for a course, or plan an event with a student organization, you are developing these skills, learning more about your own strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to work with a diverse group of people.&nbsp;</span></p>

                        <p><span>When you enter the workforce there will be new apps, programs, and technologies that will become crucial to your career. While we cannot teach what hasn&rsquo;t been developed yet, you can learn skills that will help you adapt. For example, several programs that are used to update websites are easy to learn for those familiar with Microsoft Office or </span><span>Google Workspace</span><span>. You will also need to evaluate which technologies are appropriate in which contexts and how to ethically use them. What you post on Instagram and LinkedIn will likely have very different content, as one is intended for your friends, and the latter for colleagues and employers, yet your employer may also look you up on Instagram.</span></p>

                        <p><span>Students develop leadership roles in many settings, both professional and academic. Perhaps you are a supervisor at your job. Maybe you are the president of a student organization on campus, or perhaps you take the lead on a group project in one of your classes. These are all ways to learn how to better work with others, turn a large project into smaller steps, prioritize the components, and delegate the tasks so that a larger presentation can be completed. You will have several opportunities to refine these skills during your time at USA. And be sure to include them on your resume!</span></p>

                        <p><span>Knowing work environments differ greatly, understand and demonstrate effective work habits, and act in the interest of the larger community and workplace.</span></p>
                        <p><span>Have you wondered why you have to dress professionally when you give a speech in a Public Speaking course or attend some events on campus? Why do professors give you the due dates for assignments in advance? Have you discussed the importance of civil debate in any of your classes? These are all ways of instilling expectations that will help you now, as well as later in life. Your employer will expect you to dress appropriately, which may mean scrubs in healthcare, and steel-toed </span><span>boots </span><span>in a manufacturing plant. You will be expected to manage your time, to be productive and effective, and to represent your employer. You currently represent USA, thus if you are presenting your research, or volunteering at the Mobile International Festival, you will be asked to wear what is appropriate in that setting.</span></p>

                        <p><span>It is crucial that you are able to identify and articulate the skills that you have and develop during your time at South, as well as the areas you are still cultivating. You have to market the skills that you have and know how to translate the experiences you have into knowledge. For example, if you take a class with a service learning component, complete an internship, or participate in a study abroad program, those experiences belong on your resume, because they show that you know how to apply the knowledge and skills you learned in the classroom. Everyone applying for the same job as you will probably have a college degree and an appropriate GPA, so what will </span><span>make you stand out?
