Set up a GPG key for signing Git commits on MacOS (M1)

Based on this blogpost.

To sign Git commits, you need a gpg key. GPG stands for GNU Privacy Guard and is the de facto implementation of the OpenPGP message format. PGP stands for ‘Pretty Good Privacy’ and is a standard to sign and encrypt messages.

Setting up

Install with Homebrew:

$ brew install gpg
@jpickwell
jpickwell / install-redis.sh

Signing your Git Commits on MacOS

Methods of Signing Git Commits on MacOS

Last updated March 13, 2024

This Gist explains how to sign commits using gpg in a step-by-step fashion. Previously, krypt.co was heavily mentioned, but I've only recently learned they were acquired by Akamai and no longer update their previous free products. Those mentions have been removed.

Additionally, 1Password now supports signing Git commits with SSH keys and makes it pretty easy-plus you can easily configure Git Tower to use it for both signing and ssh.

For using a GUI-based GIT tool such as Tower or Github Desktop, follow the steps here for signing your commits with GPG.

Let’s Encrypt setup for Apache, NGINX & Node.js

Let's Encrypt

Examples of getting certificates from Let's Encrypt working on Apache, NGINX and Node.js servers.

Obtain certificates

I chose to use the manual method, you have to make a file available to verify you own the domain. Follow the commands from running

git clone https://github.com/letsencrypt/letsencrypt
cd letsencrypt
// This will open up a prompt for text to send to a console session on digital ocean
// Useful for long passwords
(function () {
var t = prompt("Enter text to be sent to console, (This wont send the enter keystroke)").split("");
function f() {
var character = t.shift();
var i=[];
var code = character.charCodeAt();
var needs_shift = "!@#$%^&*()_+{}:\"<>?~|".indexOf(character) !== -1
