As Google Search Engine is always changing I wanted to provide a guide on how to understand or make since of your google search results when you Googling "how to rank on google 2017" so you can make more since of it when you google "how to rank on google 2018" next year or the next (and by you I mean we, because I learned a little here too in this breakdown).
So lets start with this screenshot of my Google Search Results I took Mid-April 2017 "how to rank on google 2017"
I think it's a fun case study to actually search "how to rank on google 2017" and see the rusults that can put their money where their mouth is. After putting it a table this is what we got.
Here I looked up each domains Alexa Rating and the date the website was created using their ICANN Whois record (that's essentially the phone book for the american internet).
Now lets start breaking down these results to maybe identify some outliner. Lets start by scratching off some of the websites acquired when the internet was still young. The reason behind this older websites have more concrete presence in search engines and we are looking for what makes sites that have been created within the past

What are backlinks?
Backlinks direct links to your website. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website. Backlinks are important for SEO because some search engines, especially Google, will give more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.

Backlinks are a pretty big part of how Google indexes a sites seniority or page rank.
How much though? No one really knows because Googles search engine is always changing and it's not open source but does enough to make a noticeable difference (even Google says so).
Think of Google's Search engine like it's a party for the cool kids and Google's search results are is a registry of everyone invited with the "coolest kids" first. Just like a cool kid's party if "www.some-unknown-site.com" say's yo check "your-site.com" Google it's dank!" Google will says "No it's not. Cuz U ain't dank.", but if Facebook says.....
