Background

Bitly is a link management platform. The company Bitly, Inc. was established in 2008. It is privately held and based in New York City. Bitly shortens 600 million links per month, for use in social networking, SMS, and email. Bitly makes money by charging for access to aggregate data created as a result of many people using the shortened URLs.

The Bitly URL shortening service became popular on Twitter after it became the default URL shortening service on the website on May 6, 2009. It was subsequently replaced by Twitter's own t.co service

What is it?

Bitly is a Url shortener tool.

Walkthrough

Watch this YouTube Video, it covers how to make new bit.ly urls, give them a custom shortened url and some other tips. The bit.ly iterface she is using is a little dif than it is now, but all the basic info you need is there.

Why am I using it?

Other than it sometimes being a nice free service, I wanted to track how many people click the link in the Twitter direct messages that gives out a promotion codes.
