GWiM - The Gimmickal Window Manager

GWiM - the Gimmickal Window Manager

The Gimmicks

There are, of course, lots of gimmicks to find when using GWiM. Here comes a list describing each one of them.

###The Mouse Gimmicks ####General Mouse

  • Like most of you are already used to (maybe you didn't know), your hand's movement speed is actually used in an exponent in order to get the mouse cursor on the screen move by a factor faster instead of "just" accelerating
  • Notice that when making enough speed, the mouse will leave a trail behind, this means a variety of things, namely
    1. You can throw (absolutely!) the mouse cursor across the screen, just by letting it go!
    2. You are making enough speed to break some of the window manager's barriers (see other subsections)

####Mouse/Window

  • Your mouse cursor will do some "unusual" things when you first want to "leave" a certain window you were working in, or so you will notice. However, take a further look! You'll see now exactly two cursors on the screen and one will fade into the other, depending on when/whether you stopped moving the mouse, in order to take a closer look. This is called Mouse/Window Snapping and it helps with the following:
    1. Have you snapped the cursor unto its place? You can now start resizing the window, by pulling the edge of the window aside
    2. Doing something visual! You'll notice that by using the scroll wheel on your mouse, you can choose from a number of useful tools. One of them is the pencil for visual lines; with which you can draw a line and connect other windows' edges or sometimes even other objects on the screen
    3. Gluing some windows together! Just use the glue from the tools (use your scroll wheel to get it)

###The Great Gimmicks ####Gimmick 01

  • Shake your window in your mouse cursor's little hand to make the window all jelly
  • Now throw the window into the side you wanted it to have; don't worry it'll become solid after!
  • Now you have one window on one side, so you could try the same on another window to put it on the other side! ;)

####Gimmick 02

  • Hold a window (by its caption bar, careful) just above a Mouse/Window snapping point, and hang on, it will generate some space to hold it for you! Another useful thing to know is that the desktop itself is also a window and thus, another Mouse/Window snapping point to try it on!
