Young Coders Forum Participant Pledge

PARTICIPANT PLEDGE

The Young Coders Conference asks all volunteers, mentors, exhibitors, participants, and their parents and carers, to respect the South London Raspberry Jam ethos of welcoming everybody without prejudice regardless of background, personal characteristics or needs, and to making the event as accessible and comfortable for everyone as possible.

The South London Raspberry Jam is dedicated to creating opportunities that are open to any and all young people and to the belief that technology is for and can be created by anyone and everyone. We are committed to valuing individuals and individual difference and fully recognising that all people we come into contact with can each make a unique and valuable contribution from which we can all benefit and grow.

The South London Raspberry Jam Young Coders Conference and Celebration of Code will be an event of compassionate innovation in which people of many different experiences, backgrounds and bodies can feel included and at home. We ask all participants to contribute to a welcoming and harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical or mental health conditions, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices.

Defamatory comments, and comments of a personal nature on any of the above characteristics, are not appropriate or welcome and will not be tolerated. Please also keep in mind that comments of a personal nature that are intended to be complimentary, as well as defamatory or derogatory comments, can be inappropriate and unwelcome and can cause offense. Please note also that comments extends to written comments online or elsewhere. Harassment in any form, aggression of any form, and violence or the threat of violence of any form (towards people or property), will not be tolerated.

We ask that all volunteers, mentors, exhibitors, participants, and their parents and carers work towards creating an inclusive event free of stigma, judgement and abuse for everyone and particularly for people you may perceive to have different needs to you. Please do not assume people’s requirements as many disabilities and conditions are not visible and should not be questioned or challenged. Please do not assume that English is everyone’s first language and please be willing to explain things several times or in simplified terms if necessary. Equally, do not expect everyone to be familiar with the technology or technical concepts you are bringing, this is very much an opportunity to share.

We aim to create a family inclusive environment in which babies and young people are welcomed to make noise or express themselves respectfully as they see fit and parents or guardians are not shushed or judged for their approaches to caring for their children or charges. Breastfeeding and chestfeeding can be undertaken without stigma or abuse.

Please contact a Conference organiser or a volunteer if you feel that any volunteer, mentor, exhibitor, participant, parent, carer or organiser has gone against this Participant Pledge so that we may either issue a warning or ask them to leave, and see if the person who was affected needs any support.

In agreeing to this pledge you are agreeing to uphold the above to the best of your knowledge and ability.

Thank you for helping us work towards the best Young Coders Conference we can for everyone. We look forward to welcoming you in February and all the amazing contributions you will bring.
