This is my CURRENT monitor setup. I'm using it RIGHT NOW. I use all
day most days for programming / writing software / sysadmin tasks but
this thing is great for just about everything. I do play games
occasionally and it's great, I don't notice any issues, response delay,
or anything else. It just works.
Seriously, this setup (the whole thing, including camera, fully
adjustable stand, mounts, cables) is CHEAPER than a 27in Apple Thunderbolt
Display and is nearly twice the size and way more features. The reason
it's cheaper is because it DOES NOT have a TV TUNER in it. Which is good,
because we don't need it. We need glass. And lots of it. And 60hz min.
And now we have a reasonable option. And it is glorious.
IMPORTANT: In order to get 4k 60hz:
- This is the oldest MBP that can do it (I'm using it right now) MacBook
Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
- Make sure you use the mini-displayport input and change input to
DP 1.2 in the monitor's menu.
ALSO IMPORTANT: | |
This thing is SUPER BRIGHT, you *will* need to tone down the brightness
quite a bit unless you want to burn out your retinas. On the bright side,
it can get mega bright so it works well in natural sunlight.
If you're a programmer, full-time technology worker, spreadsheet jocky,
or want to look like a day trader -- this setup will change your life.
It *will* take you a week or so to get used to this much screen. You need
to re-learn where windows will pop up... heard the ding? got a notification?
Good luck finding that your first time at 3480x2160 ;) Seriously though,
consider using some kind of window manager so you can have multiple windows
setup tiled. Treat it as 2x or 3x monitors. One side for this, the other
for that -- so you know where to look. Sounds dumb, but it helps. |
