Dear all, | |
We are organising, starting Wednesday on the 2nd of December, a reading group on an introductory book for machine learning.
The book is called "The Elements of Statistical Learning" and is freely available online: http://statweb.stanford.edu/~tibs/ElemStatLearn/.
The book requires some basic background in Linear Algebra and Probability Theory usually covered in maths undergraduate courses.
The reading group will take place every Wednesday between 17:30 - 19:30 in X-Men Origins Seminar Room, Kathleen Lonsdale Building, 5 Gower Place.
Please find directions to such an exciting place here:

Everybody is most welcome to attend the Reading Group.
I will keep the following page:
https://gist.github.com/afiodorov/6815066846bc303ec4f8
posted about our progress for people who might want to join us later.
Feel free to contact me on [email protected] if you have any questions.
Cheers, | |
Tom (which is short for Artiom in my universe) |

For people who missed yesterday's meet-up:
Quite a few people came, perhaps 20? Didn't count. We stopped in the middle of the section 2.4, around equation (2.19). The following guidelines emerged:
More presenters are always welcomed. Drop me a line if you want to present and I will tell you what section you should prepare.
The role of presenters is go over the material in the book in a very accessible manner addressing and raising questions along the way.
Other administrative issues were raised. People want to move organisation of this from gist.github.com to google groups. I will happily do it, but I need everyone's email address. If you don't think I know your email: email me you address now.
Thanks everyone for coming and thanks to Tanya for presenting :)!
