brew update

brew install openssl

ln -s /usr/local/opt/openssl/lib/libcrypto.1.0.0.dylib /usr/local/lib/

ln -s /usr/local/opt/openssl/lib/libssl.1.0.0.dylib /usr/local/lib/

for what it's worth, I got through a compile (v2.48) with:

./configure LDFLAGS=-L/opt/homebrew/lib/ CFLAGS="-I/opt/homebrew/include"

on my M1 mac. Zero symlinks or copying of files!
