Tl;dr Lemontree, a new kind of startup non-profit, seeks a change-making Product Manager to help us solve big problems of all kinds.
At Lemontree, we sell family dinner. We believe in the power of sitting down together for a home cooked meal. We understand the magic of saying “here I made this” and connecting with loved ones.
Our product helps the more than a million moms, dads and kids across New York struggling with hunger set the table with pride and possibility. Every week, we deliver everything our customers need to create an amazing dinner for just three dollars a plate.

In 2018 we delivered 4,000 meals. In 2019 we delivered 25,000. Our goal is to grow even faster in 2020.
And we have the money to make a real impact– we’ve raised more than two million dollars from a world-class family of donors (everyone from Danny Meyer, to the Robin Hood Foundation, to partners at USV).
Now we’re using that money to hire the best.
As a tiny startup (we’re just five people) we value sitting together most days to eat lunch–as passionate home cooks, most of us bring lunch from home.
And we hold each other accountable to do big things. We understand the magnitude of the problem we’re trying to solve and we’re not wasting time. Areas of ownership matter, but taking initiative is more important. We all lend a hand and jump in whenever something needs to get done.
As Product Manager you bring empathy, rigor and fastidiousness to every aspect of our organization.
You’ll have the leeway to own meaty problems and find solutions to them, always starting from a place of understanding (we survey and interview our customers religiously).
Recent questions we’ve answered:
- How do we make sure we’re delivering the right amount of food?
- How do we use text messaging to drive behavior change through winbacks and surveys?
- How do we build an onboarding flow for a population that’s less likely to be literate?
In the next quarter, we expect to tackle payment infrastructure for the underbanked, new product lines for picky kids and a direct mail strategy. We expect that you would feel comfortable leading any of these.
Backgrounds are less important than attitude (although we’d like you to have 3-5 years job experience solving hard problems). We don’t give a shit where you went to college.
- You are process minded–we aim to scale to hundreds of thousands of families served. We won’t do that in an ad-hoc way. You need to be constantly thinking about ways to document and scale what you’re doing.
- You keep your promises–when you say something is going to get done, it gets done.
- Empathy is your middle name–we exist to help people, that means we need you to put our clients first every time.
- You should be an autodidact–every day will be different and we need you to be amazing at tackling problems you’ve never seen before and learning new skills.
- You exude warmth–whether you’re meeting with a trucking company CEO or a low-income Dad, they leave the interaction feeling fantastic.
- You stand up to authority– call us on our bullshit. Tell us when we can do better. We’re all in this together.
- You’re a team player– Lemontree is about community, and we value that in the office too. The CEO throws out the trash and our head of special projects often jumps in to do customer service.
- Extra credit if you’ve built software, are an excel wiz, enjoy reading, know a ton about operations, speak spanish, love to cook, or have volunteer experience.
As we scale, there will be lots of leeway for you to grow into bigger and bigger roles. This is the perfect path to a COO role or other leadership position.
If you’re interested in starting your own startup one day, this is an amazing opportunity on the path to founder-dom. You’ll learn all of the nuts and bolts needed to build something from nothing.
We are committed to fostering a community that values diverse perspectives and experiences, particularly from those who we aim to serve. We actively seek applicants from, or who have worked closely with, historically marginalized groups, including but not limited to: people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ people, first- or second-generation immigrants, and people from low-income families.
