Mod 1 Week 5: Creating Your Vision, Part II
- Habits Reflection:
- How have you seen yourself become more aware of your habits? Have you tried implementing anything new? What have the results been?
I've seen myself become more aware of my habits by checking in with myself. I'm more intune with my mental wellbeing, and try to take more breaks and get more exercise when I feel myself getting stressed or burned out. I've recently been trying to wake up earlier a few days a week to get some quality time outside before class starts. There were some days where I felt too busy and stressed to take long breaks and get out to refresh, so I need to do a better job about making that happen.
- Design Thinking Reflection: Cultivating Beginner's Mind
- How can beginner's mind be helpful when it comes to thinking about your career and job search? What are some habits you could put into place to cultivate beginner's mind regularly?
It can be helpful in reframing a fixed mindset that I might set about software developing and having the ability to go into experiences with an open mind. Since software developing is new to me, I'm already going into this with a form of beginners mindset. I need to aware of times when I think I am on autopilot and try and shift my mindset back to a beginners mindset when this occurs. Furthermore I don't have a lot of experience with apply for jobs--specifically professional ones, so most of this experience is brand new to me, and need to use that lack of experience to my benefit.
- Go through the Flower Exercise brainstorming worksheets linked here. Then complete your Flower Exercise final worksheet here and link that finished worksheet here.
- Write out your top 5 strengths that you've seen in action this module; then write out the strengths of a software developer. Where do you see these lists overlapping? Where are they different?
My top 5 strengths in no particular order:
- Motivated to learn new concepts
- Determined to get work/projects done
- Work well in a group setting
- Listen (to others, and give space for others)
- Ability to explain my code, verbalize what I am doing
Strengths of a developer:
- Problem solve, work well as a team, stay on task, approachable(can ask questions to/give feedback), understand the scope of the work and how things interact with eachother
There are many overlaps in my strengths and the strengths I think a software developer should have. Maybe it's just the nature of Turing, but I feel like my balance between my personal life and school is heavily weighted towards school. This is okay now, but I will need a better balance in the future. I can feel my stress slowly starting to build as my workload increases and finals approach. I also need to do a better job about scheduling my work flow. I believe I have a good foundation of skills to build upon, to maybe one day become a successful software developer.
- Write a refined vision statement here (what new things have you discovered this week to incorporate into your vision statement?):
My vision is to have a rewarding career where I am solving problems to that will hopefully help the world become better in some way. I want to be able to understand how the things I am working on interact with eachother--the full scope of the problem. Furthermore I want a healthy work-life balance, where I am not sacrificing things that are important to me on a personal level.
