Computer

Software I use on my compter{laptop, server, raspberrypi}, and recommendations for services

My attempt to get myself into documenting stuff. All the things I put I usually have had good experiences with and enjoy using.

Core System

  • An Arch based GNU/Linux distribution
  • Sway + Waybar
  • Pipewire + Wireplumber + Pipewire-Pulse
  • Connman > NetworkManager
  • Kitty Terminal Emulator

Multimedia Applications

  • Neomutt Email
  • VLC or mpv for playing videos and audios
  • Nautilus or Thunar
  • Librewolf: Most fingerprinting resistant than most browser I have tried, and works out of the box
    • Essential Extensions:
      • Ublock Origin
      • LibRedirect
      • I don't care about cookies
  • MPD (music player daemon): Simple way to listen to music

*aaS (* as a Service)

  • Infrastructure
    • DigitalOcean: Generally good cloud service provider, students get $200 credit for 1yr.
    • Linode: Pretty good cloud service provider I would use if I didn't have DO credit
    • BuyVM: Ignores DMCA for Luxembourg server, accepts payments in monero, pretty good performance
    • Cloudflare: Best DNS provider I have used. Very good free cdn, but keep in mind the privacy implications of TLS interception.
  • General Services
    • Migadu: Top tier email provider that gives 50% student discount
    • Porkbun: Amazing domain registration
    • doggo.ninja: W file host, it is invite only (challenge)
    • 0x0.st: Great public file host

Privacy frontends

  • Youtube: Invidous or Piped
  • YT Music: BeatBump or HyperPipe
  • Reddit: Libreddit, teddit
  • Wikipedia: Wikiless
  • Twitter: Nitter

Selfhosted Services

  • Cryptpad: Basically google drive/docs/sheets/slides/forms but encrypted
  • Jellyfin: Give it some movie/tv files, and you soon will have your own netflix
  • *arr stack: Automated downloading (usually via torrent) of movies, tv, audio, ...
  • Authentik: Federated identity provider (oauth server)
  • SearXNG: Fork of SearX, a private search aggregator
