Baltimore

breakfast

  • Teavolve: Fell's Point, good tea and coffee, wait gets long on Sundays but is quick other days
  • Papermoon Diner: Remington, breakfast food is better than dinner food, all day breakfast
  • Dooby's: Mt. Vernon, very friendly baristas
  • Belvedere Bagels: Mt. Vernon, tiny greasy-spoon / hole-in-the-wall, probably my favorite breakfast spot in the city
  • Golden West: Hampden, long wait for brunch on weekends, very very hipster
  • Greg's Bagels: Belvedere Square, seriously amazing bagels
  • Milk and Honey: Mt. Vernon, excellent smoothies!, vibe is a little pretentious
  • Mick O'Shea's: Downtown (mayyybe Mt. Vernon), Irish Pub, they do a really good weekend brunch and there's almost never a wait

burgers / bar food

  • Kooper's: Fell's Point, good burgers (including turkey and veggie burgers), beer and salad and fries are also delicious
  • Mick O'Shea's: Downtown/Mt. Vernon, Monday is $9 burger + beer night
  • Owl Bar: Mt. Vernon, good drinks / food / brick oven pizza
  • Ale Mary's: Fell's Point, straight-up bar food. Very good for specialty tater tots, and for celebrating after a janky round of duckpin at Patterson Park Bowl
  • Alexander's: Fell's Point, all-around great restaurant, excellent desserts
  • Rye: Fell's Point, really just a bar, but they serve food from the place next door (Willow, I think). It's mainley a whiskey bar, but they've got great cocktails and really awesome bartenders. I also had Millstone Harvest Cider there, which is a surprisingly delightful wine/cider combo.

pizza

  • Johnny Rad's: Fell's Point / Canton / Patterson Park (depending on who you ask). My favorite pizza in Baltimore. Thin but not super thin crust.
  • Iggies: Mt. Vernon, neat little BYOB place, thin but not super thin crust, has been described as "kinda girly" by my old roommate's 6'3" uncle from Alabama (as in, they don't have like a "meat lover's supreme" pizza, but they do have several pizzas featuring pesto, nuts, arugula, mushrooms, and/or fancy meats like duck or prosciutto).
  • Owl Bar: Mt. Vernon, their pizza is great. They have one of those big brick fire ovens and you can watch them make your pizza for you.
  • Brick Oven Pizza: Fell's Point, fantastic slices in the store! However, delivered BOP pizza is significantly less tasty and I do not recommend it at all.
  • Joe Squared: North Ave (and I think there's a location in the Inner Harbor), kind of a Baltimore institution, but personally I think there are just toooo many toppings and that the crust is a little soft/sweet for me.

Indian

  • Akbar: Mt. Vernon, my favorite Indian place in the city. They'll also happily do carry-out orders.
  • Indigma: Mt. Vernon, also quite delicious, but a bit more expensive than Akbar
  • Mughal Garden: Mt. Vernon, I've only had their lunch buffet. It was very good.

ice cream

  • Uncle Wiggly's: Mt. Washington. Amazingly good ice cream (I love the salted caramel) and the vibe is like...perfect summer evening. (There's a porch and everything!)
  • Pitango: Fell's Point. a little overpriced imo, but really delicious, and they have little tiny cups of Italian hot chocolate in the winter, so that's awesome.
  • Baltimore falls short in terms of "number of local ice cream places" :/ I really want to try the Charmery -- if it's good, I'll feel better about this list!

coffee

  • Tribeca: Mt. Vernon, they roast their own beans (and it's really good), very very hipster
  • Koffee Therapy: Mt. Vernon/downtown, great coffee, very reasonable prices! Hours are a little weird though: closed Sundays and most federal holidays, closes at 5pm most days and 11am(!) on Mondays.
  • Artifact: Hampden (ish), really good coffee and food, really hard to get a table for weekend/Sunday brunch.
  • Daily Grind: Fell's Point, their flavored coffee is really good
  • Dooby's: Mt. Vernon, good coffee, good iced coffee, good espresso

DC

  • Founding Farmer's: Foggy Bottom, excellent food (farm-to-table type stuff) and really amazing coffee. I went for brunch.
  • We, the Pizza: Capitol Hill (and other locations), yum.
  • Good Stuff Eatery: Capitol Hill (and other locations), burgers and fries and milkshakes, ohhh the milkshakes!
  • I've been to a couple other good pizza places, but I have to check with a friend to see what they were.

New York

  • Ground Support: coffee, SoHo. C/E Spring St. I like their espresso and their molasses cookies. They also have a surprising amount of seating.
  • Prodigy, coffee, West Village. 1 Houston St.
  • Cones: ice cream, West Village. 1 Christopher St or A/B/C/D/E/F/M West 4th St. The almond cream ice cream is fantastic.
  • Ample Hills: ice cream, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. B/Q 7th Ave or 2/3 Grand Army Plaza. (I think there are a few more locations now too). I particularly like the soft serve (it's homemade and there are interesting flavors) but you really can't go wrong here.
  • Barboncino, pizza, Crown Heights, Brooklyn. 2/3/4/5 Franklin Ave.
  • Brownstone Bagel and Bread Co.: bagels, Park Slope, Brooklyn. F/G 7th Ave. I really liked the bagels here (they were really fresh). I liked bagel sandwiches better elsewhere, though.
  • Brooklyn Crepes: crepes/smoothies, Park Slope, Brooklyn. 2/3 Bergen St or B/Q 7th Ave. I went to this place almost every weekday morning for about two months when I lived in Prospect Heights...their smoothies are great and the staff is really friendly.
  • Alidoro: Italian sandwiches, SoHo. C/E Spring St. Really excellent sandwiches. Staff is sometimes a little New-York-ish (by which I mean, unfriendly).
  • Thelewala: Indian street food (kati rolls), Greenwich Village-ish area? (right below Washington Square Park). A/B/C/D/E/F/M West 4th St. Really really delicious.
  • Coppelia: 24-hour diner, West Village/Chelsea. 1/2/3 14th St. so-so milkshakes but reasonably-priced, delicious breakfast food.
  • Tom's: breakfast/lunch, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. 2/3 Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum. Awesome diner. I dig the cinnamon waffle. They give you little snacks (orange slices, coffee, pancake bites) while you're waiting for a table.

Minneapolis / St. Paul

  • Sebastian Joe's: ice cream, Uptown Mpls. Have the raspberry chocolate chip, because it's A-MAZING. (It's made with real raspberries.)
  • Grand Ole Creamery: ice cream, Grand Ave in St. Paul.
  • Hazel's: breakfast, Northeast Mpls.
  • Pat's Tap: bar w/ food, Southwest Mpls. It has an anagram theme and also skee ball, so...
  • Sociable Cider Werks: bar specializing in cider, Northeast Mpls. There's at least one bartender with a strong resemblance to Thor.
  • Highland Grill: Highland Park, St. Paul, really awesome pancakes
  • Lowbrow: brunch/burgers/beer, Southwest Mpls, more really awesome pancakes.
  • Bad Waitress: cafe/breakfast/dinner, Uptown Mpls, fun vibe, breakfast all day, great milkshakes open late
