These are some steps that users can take to retain privacy online. These aren't perfect, but aim to strike a balance between privacy and usability.
- Enable Do Not Track in your browser
- Use a tracker blocking plugin such as Privacy Badger or Ghostery
- Disable third-party cookies
- Use the HTTPS Everywhere browser extension
Level 1, plus:
- Use DuckDuckGo in place of Google
- Use the uBlock Origin browser plugin
Levels 1 & 2, plus:
- Use one browser for sites you log in to (email, social media sites, banks) and Firefox for all other browsing
- Add the self-destructing cookies plugin to Firefox
Levels 1, 2, & 3, plus:
- Use a VPN service
- Add the no-script plugin to Firefox, and self select where and when JavaScript will run
