Ashe's hair dyeing proces

I, personally, have a salon bleach any hair that I am going to be dyeing over. They know what they're doing more than me so I won't have broken, damaged hair and bleaching it means that the color will be much more bright and last longer.

Prep

I have just a small section of hair to dye (right now it's just the front part of my hair, but I will be bleaching + dyeing the underside next month), I am able to do all of this myself.

You will need:

  • dye. I use three different colors for my hair (The nice thing about Special Effects is that they're vegan, not tested on animals, and the base of the dye is a conditioner.) :
  • gloves. I use latex-free and powder-free nitrile gloves that I got at Walgreens for pretty cheap
  • saran wrap. I dampen the bathroom counter and sink and then cover it with saran wrap so it's easy cleanup without any scrubbing.
  • a comb you're willing to sacrifice to the dye job gods.
  • an old hand towel or paper towels. I keep this on hand to quickly clean up any dye I accidentally get on my face.

For my current hair:

  • I dye the ends of my hair first, dyeing some pieces Fishbowl and others Blue Mayhem. I make sure there is quite a lot of dye on the hair because blues and greens run and fade faster than other colors.

  • Without washing the gloves off, I start dyeing from the roots over the tips in Sonic Green.

For my previous hair (currently visible in my avatar):

  • I dye the tips of my hair first in Blue Mayhem.

  • Without washing the gloves off, I start dyeing from roots over the tips with Fishbowl. Sometimes I'll mix a little bit of Sonic Green in with the Fishbowl for some pieces to break up the colors.

Setting

  • I pin the hair away from my skin on the top of my head and let it sit for at least a few hours. The longer the better. I don't heat treat at all, but I know a lot of people do, using a hair dryer.

  • Once I am ready to wash it out, I take a luke-warm shower and wash my hair with a very small amount of shampoo until the water runs clear.

Care and Feeding

  • I wash my hair every other day in luke-warm water and use a mask to keep the hair shiny and healthy since bleach can be damaging.

I find that Raw Color (also vegan) lasts longer than any hair dye I've purchased for use at home. Also ++ on getting your hair bleached at a salon. It astounds me how healthy my hair is after my stylist is the one to bleach me.
