Speaker bio

Ashe Dryden is an indie ruby developer. She is an outspoken educator for diversity, inclusiveness, and empathy. When she isn't discussing technology or it’s intersection with culture, she's cycling, tweeting, playing board games, debating the social implications of Star Trek episodes, being that awkward girl at the party, and waiting for her next burrito fix.

Abstract

The state of diversity in open source contributions is abysmal. With the number of female OSS contributors at a shockingly low 1.5% and other groups not even documented, we need to ask what we can be doing better as a community. We’ll discuss the barriers that people face contributing to our open source projects and what we can do to increase participation.

Notes

I've been in the Ruby community for the past 4 years and in open source for 13. Much of my work over the past year has been talking about how we can increase diversity and inclusion in all of our spaces. This talk will focus on how we, as OSS contributors, can create a better experience for everyone wanting to contribute to our projects.
