<dc:title>Chapter 13 - Systems Biology of Pancreatic Cancer Stem Cells</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>Pancreatic cancer is one of the most malignant and aggressive forms of cancers that is not amenable to any of the available therapeutics. The vast majority of patients present with highly advanced or metastatic disease with no curative treatment options. Pancreatic cancer's low prognosis rate of five years post diagnosis has been mainly attributed to high metastasis rate and drug resistance. The molecular mechanisms underlying its aggressive nature are mostly unknown and under investigation. The completion of the human genome project at the turn of the century ushered in a new era in which researchers exploited genetic, epigenetic, and proteomic expression profiling methodologies in pancreatic cells, advanced animal models, and patient cohorts leading to a generation of unprecedented amount of datasets. Such analyses have allowed for the evaluations of pancreas samples at much greater molecular depths. However, these efforts have yet to yield any meaningful or tangible outcome. One of the primary reasons for such poor progress is that barring few isolated cases, most of these large-scale expression studies were performed with a reductionist view. The complexity of the disease requires holistic approaches that are expected to allow better understanding of the different components that drive heterogeneous pancreas tumors. In this chapter we highlight the importance of systems and network biology in pancreas cancer diagnostics, prevention, and therapy. We conclude with an example of how systems biology can be helpful in understanding pancreatic cancer heterogeneity, especially in the analyses of highly resistant pancreatic cancer stem-like cells.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>The spatial scaling of habitat selection by African elephants</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>1. Understanding and accurately predicting the spatial patterns of habitat use by organisms is important for ecological research, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. However, this understanding is complicated by the effects of spatial scale, because the scale of analysis affects the quantification of species–environment relationships. 2. We therefore assessed the influence of environmental context (i.e. the characteristics of the landscape surrounding a site), varied over a large range of scales (i.e. ambit radii around focal sites), on the analysis and prediction of habitat selection by African elephants in Kruger National Park, South Africa. 3. We focused on the spatial scaling of the elephants’ response to their main resources, forage and water, and found that the quantification of habitat selection strongly depended on the scales at which environmental context was considered. Moreover, the inclusion of environmental context at characteristic scales (i.e. those at which habitat selectivity was maximized) increased the predictive capacity of habitat suitability models. 4. The elephants responded to their environment in a scale-dependent and perhaps hierarchical manner, with forage characteristics driving habitat selection at coarse spatial scales, and surface water at fine spatial scales. 5. Furthermore, the elephants exhibited sexual habitat segregation, mainly in relation to vegetation characteristics. Male elephants preferred areas with high tree cover and low herbaceous biomass, whereas this pattern was reversed for female elephants. 6. We show that the spatial distribution of elephants can be better understood and predicted when scale-dependent species–environment relationships are explicitly considered. This demonstrates the importance of considering the influence of spatial scale on the analysis of spatial patterning in ecological phenomena.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>Early black doctors in South Africa</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>The article adopts the approach of a group biography in discussing the careers and ambitions of early black South African doctors selecting both those trained abroad, and the first cohorts trained within South Africa who graduated at the Universities of Cape Town and the Witwatersrand from 1945-6. It focuses on the ambiguities involved, by looking at tensions between professional altruism and entrepreneurialism in pursuing a medical career, as well as that between self-interest and selflessness in attempting to balance the requirements of a medical practice against those involved in political leadership. The paper highlights the significance of the political leadership given by black doctors in the mid-twentieth century and indicates the price paid for this in loss of medical resources under the apartheid regime. Two annexes provide original data on the medical and political contributions of individuals.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>From poverty to power: how active citizens and effective states can change the world</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>The twenty-first century will be defined by the fight against the scourges of poverty, inequality, and the threat of environmental collapse–as the fight against slavery or for universal suffrage defined earlier eras. From Poverty to Power argues that to break the cycle of poverty and inequality and to give poor people power over their own destinies a radical redistribution of power, opportunities, and assets is required. The two driving forces behind such a transformation are active citizens and effective states. Why active citizenship? Because people living in poverty must have a voice in deciding their own destiny, fighting for rights and justice in their own society, and holding states and the private sector to account. Why effective states? Because history shows that no country has prospered without a state structure than can actively manage the development process. There is now an added urgency beyond the moral case for tackling poverty and inequality, we need to build a secure, fair, and sustainable world before climate change makes it impossible. This book argues that there is still time, provided leaders, organizations, and individuals act. Starting today

<dc:title>Mobile perspectives: on teaching mobile literacy</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>While recognizing that digital access is not evenly distributed in the United States, which is to say nothing of the global distribution, one can safely say that this transformation is already here; people are already at the moment in which the ability to use social media, and particularly social media as amplified through the power of the mobile web, has become a key literacy. What makes this moment more complicated is that just as educators have introduced computers into the classroom--just as they have started to come to terms with the idea of wired learning spaces, mediated laptops, and occasionally the now-dinosaur-like desktops--the mobile web is about to make all this technological adaptation rather outdated. The unwired learning space is about to substantially alter the landscape of teaching with and through technology. The author opines that ethically, teachers are called to teach students how to use these technologies effectively, to ensure that they end up on the right side of the digital divide: the side that knows how to use social media to band together. The author contends that teaching mobile web literacy is as crucial as teaching basic literacy. Educators have obligations to consider how the mobile Internet changes not only how they teach, but what it means to be knowledgeable and educated in their culture. (Contains 3 notes.)</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>Cry, the beloved country</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>An Oprah Book Club selection, Cry, the Beloved Country, the most famous and important novel in South Africa’s history, was an immediate worldwide bestseller in 1948. Alan Paton’s impassioned novel about a black man’s country under white man’s law is a work of searing beauty.Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be too moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much. The eminent literary critic Lewis Gannett wrote, “We have had many novels from statesmen and reformers, almost all bad; many novels from poets, almost all thin. In Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country the statesman, the poet and the novelist meet in a unique harmony.” Cry, the Beloved Country is the deeply moving story of the Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son, Absalom, set against the background of a land and a people riven by racial injustice. Remarkable for its lyricism, unforgettable for character and incident, Cry, the Beloved Country is a classic work of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>Field guide to insects of South Africa</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>Given the extraordinary number and diversity of insect species and their vast importance to human life, it comes as a surprise that there is no reasonably comprehensive field guide on insects in South Africa. The need for a more detailed and accessible field guide to the rich insect life of South Africa has long been recognized. This comprehensive, illustrated popular guide draws not only on the accumulated knowledge of the authors, but also on that of numerous specialists on the various insect groups. It will succeed, hopefully, in opening up the fascinating life of insects to a wide range of students, gardeners, farmers, conservationists and anyone wanting to find out more about these tiny creatures that intrigue and irritate, benefit and damage us in seemingly equal measure.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>Great lives, pivotal moments</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>Starkly revealing the deep and demoralizing impact segregation and apartheid had on the identity of South Africa’s citizens, this extraordinary pictorial of the Sunday Times celebrates the fearless news makers and pivotal events of the country’s last 100 years. Presenting an exciting sweep of South African history and honoring the instrumental events and figures of the country’s rich heritage—such as Olive Schreiner’s fight for women’s rights and Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s leadership of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission—this intimate portraiture is a stunning tribute to South Africa’s divided past. Enriched by archival treasures and images previously unavailable to the public, this beautifully compiled and invaluable documentation demonstrates the individual and collective spirit of courage and resistance that characterized much of the struggle for democracy in a uniquely troubled country.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>Poverty and HIV and AIDS</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>In recent years there has been an increased interest to study and understand poverty and how it impacts on disease and epidemics (Boucekkine and Laffargue, 2007). In particular, the focus has been to understand the relationship between poverty and HIV/AIDS, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV prevalence is high and consequences are also harsh on already vulnerable communities (Cohen, 1998). The worsening economic situation is likely to continue to impact negatively on health and development, especially in countries that are already severely affected by HIV and AIDS. In the context of this background, it is important to review the link between HIV and AIDS and poverty in order to further understand the relationship between the two.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>Field guide to the larger mammals of Africa</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>Of the world's 4,000 to 4,500 mammal species, about 1,100 occur in Africa. In this updated and revised edition of Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa, authors Chris and Tilde Stuart concentrate on the more visible and easily distinguished larger mammal species, plus some of the more frequently seen smaller mammals. In all, over 400 color photographs, combined with concise, pertinent information highlighting the diagnostic features of each species, provide a comprehensive source of information on each mammal. The latest information has been incorporated and the distribution maps have been revised to reflect the most up-to-date habitat and distribution patterns for each species. A new feature is the inclusion of the mammals' skulls, grouped together at the back of the book. To aid the reader, color-coding and symbols indicating the habitat and activity period serve as a quick reference to the various mammal groups.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:description>The history and development of fire and invasive alien plant management policies in fynbos during the 20th century are reviewed. Fire was initially condemned outright as a destructive force, but as its vital role became better understood, management policies switched from protection to active burning in 1968. During the 1970s, large, coordinated research programmes were established, resulting in a solid basis of knowledge on which to develop fire management policies. Despite policies of prescribed burning, wild fires remain the dominant feature of the region, fortunately driving a variable fire regime that remains broadly aligned with conservation objectives. The problem of conserving fire-adapted fynbos is complicated by invading alien trees that are also fire-adapted. Research results were used to demonstrate the impacts of these invasions on water yields, leading to the creation of one of the largest alien plant control programmes globally. Despite improvements in control methods, alien trees, notably pines, continue to spread almost unchecked. Biological control offered some hope for controlling pines, but was ruled out as too high a risk for these commercially-important trees. Failure to address this problem adequately will almost certainly result in the severe degradation of remaining fynbos ecosystems.</dc:description>
