<dc:title>Chapter 13 - Systems Biology of Pancreatic Cancer Stem Cells</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>Pancreatic cancer is one of the most malignant and aggressive forms of cancers that is not amenable to any of the available therapeutics. The vast majority of patients present with highly advanced or metastatic disease with no curative treatment options. Pancreatic cancer's low prognosis rate of five years post diagnosis has been mainly attributed to high metastasis rate and drug resistance. The molecular mechanisms underlying its aggressive nature are mostly unknown and under investigation. The completion of the human genome project at the turn of the century ushered in a new era in which researchers exploited genetic, epigenetic, and proteomic expression profiling methodologies in pancreatic cells, advanced animal models, and patient cohorts leading to a generation of unprecedented amount of datasets. Such analyses have allowed for the evaluations of pancreas samples at much greater molecular depths. However, these efforts have yet to yield any meaningful or tangible outcome. One of the primary reasons for such poor progress is that barring few isolated cases, most of these large-scale expression studies were performed with a reductionist view. The complexity of the disease requires holistic approaches that are expected to allow better understanding of the different components that drive heterogeneous pancreas tumors. In this chapter we highlight the importance of systems and network biology in pancreas cancer diagnostics, prevention, and therapy. We conclude with an example of how systems biology can be helpful in understanding pancreatic cancer heterogeneity, especially in the analyses of highly resistant pancreatic cancer stem-like cells.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>The spatial scaling of habitat selection by African elephants</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>1. Understanding and accurately predicting the spatial patterns of habitat use by organisms is important for ecological research, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. However, this understanding is complicated by the effects of spatial scale, because the scale of analysis affects the quantification of species–environment relationships. 2. We therefore assessed the influence of environmental context (i.e. the characteristics of the landscape surrounding a site), varied over a large range of scales (i.e. ambit radii around focal sites), on the analysis and prediction of habitat selection by African elephants in Kruger National Park, South Africa. 3. We focused on the spatial scaling of the elephants’ response to their main resources, forage and water, and found that the quantification of habitat selection strongly depended on the scales at which environmental context was considered. Moreover, the inclusion of environmental context at characteristic scales (i.e. those at which habitat selectivity was maximized) increased the predictive capacity of habitat suitability models. 4. The elephants responded to their environment in a scale-dependent and perhaps hierarchical manner, with forage characteristics driving habitat selection at coarse spatial scales, and surface water at fine spatial scales. 5. Furthermore, the elephants exhibited sexual habitat segregation, mainly in relation to vegetation characteristics. Male elephants preferred areas with high tree cover and low herbaceous biomass, whereas this pattern was reversed for female elephants. 6. We show that the spatial distribution of elephants can be better understood and predicted when scale-dependent species–environment relationships are explicitly considered. This demonstrates the importance of considering the influence of spatial scale on the analysis of spatial patterning in ecological phenomena.</dcterms:abstract>

<dcterms:abstract>The article adopts the approach of a group biography in discussing the careers and ambitions of early black South African doctors selecting both those trained abroad, and the first cohorts trained within South Africa who graduated at the Universities of Cape Town and the Witwatersrand from 1945-6. It focuses on the ambiguities involved, by looking at tensions between professional altruism and entrepreneurialism in pursuing a medical career, as well as that between self-interest and selflessness in attempting to balance the requirements of a medical practice against those involved in political leadership. The paper highlights the significance of the political leadership given by black doctors in the mid-twentieth century and indicates the price paid for this in loss of medical resources under the apartheid regime. Two annexes provide original data on the medical and political contributions of individuals.</dcterms:abstract>

<dc:title>Mobile perspectives: on teaching mobile literacy</dc:title>
<dcterms:abstract>While recognizing that digital access is not evenly distributed in the United States, which is to say nothing of the global distribution, one can safely say that this transformation is already here; people are already at the moment in which the ability to use social media, and particularly social media as amplified through the power of the mobile web, has become a key literacy. What makes this moment more complicated is that just as educators have introduced computers into the classroom--just as they have started to come to terms with the idea of wired learning spaces, mediated laptops, and occasionally the now-dinosaur-like desktops--the mobile web is about to make all this technological adaptation rather outdated. The unwired learning space is about to substantially alter the landscape of teaching with and through technology. The author opines that ethically, teachers are called to teach students how to use these technologies effectively, to ensure that they end up on the right side of the digital divide: the side that knows how to use social media to band together. The author contends that teaching mobile web literacy is as crucial as teaching basic literacy. Educators have obligations to consider how the mobile Internet changes not only how they teach, but what it means to be knowledgeable and educated in their culture. <dcterms:abstract>In recent years there has been an increased interest to study and understand poverty and how it impacts on disease and epidemics (Boucekkine and Laffargue, 2007). In particular, the focus has been to understand the relationship between poverty and HIV/AIDS, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV prevalence is high and consequences are also harsh on already vulnerable communities (Cohen, 1998). The worsening economic situation is likely to continue to impact negatively on health and development, especially in countries that are already severely affected by HIV and AIDS. In the context of this background, it is important to review the link between HIV and AIDS and poverty in order to further understand the relationship between the two.</dcterms:abstract>

Biological control offered some hope for controlling pines, but was ruled out as too high a risk for these commercially-important trees. Failure to address this problem adequately will almost certainly result in the severe degradation of remaining fynbos ecosystems.</dc:description>
