Structure Property Relationships for a Polymer/Fiber Composite System

Proposal

Fibers in a injection molded polymer form a very complex structure. As the fibers cause a significant reinforcement of the part, their arrangement is an important aspect of the structure of the overall part. Fiber density and distibution will greatly affect the local and bulk properties of the system.

Critical Data

Data will need to be derived from both simulations and experiments. Data sets will include: Micro-CT images, simulated microstructures, finite element data and mechanical testing results.

Simulation Data

  • Microstructure Simulation
  • Finite Element Models

Experimental Data

  • Mechanical Testing
  • MicroCT 3D images
  • Example 2D images showing fibers:

Data Analytics

  • Quantification of microstructure in the form of n-statistics
  • Identification of important features of the microstructure
  • Development of multivariate linear regression model to establish structure-mechanical property correlations

Measures for Success

  • Data collection – Simulated and Experimental
  • Establishment of data-driven approach for correlating structure and property with minimum possible training and testing error
