In Ubuntu Gnome 14.04, open dconf-editor. Go to
org>gnome>nautilus>preferences.

Check the box next to enable-interactive-search. Restart nautilus

      Thanks! In order to restart nautilus, either relogin or give nautilus -q and then nautilus -n in the Alt+F2 box. – hakermania Oct 26 '14 at 19:11
