 <p>Named after Israel's first Prime Minister, one of the chief architects of Plan Dalet, or the military campaign to dispossess Palestinians en masse, Ben Gurion Airport is notorious for its hyper-surveillance and <a target="_blank" href="http://electronicintifada.net/content/suspected-citizens-racial-profiling-against-arab-passengers-israeli-airports-and-airlines#.TtEsWmO4q7t">racial profiling</a> primarily against Arabs and those of Arab descent.  Authorities do little to hide the airport's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/in-a-side-room-at-the-airport-1.296459"> racism</a>, assigning color and number codes to passers-through that vary according national-ethnic origins. Until 2011, Jewish Israelis flying out of Israel regularly received a "1" sticker, indicating the lowest threat level, while indigenous Palestinians will likely receive a "5" or "6", making them susceptible to <a target="_blank" href="http://www.ifamericaknew.org/cur_sit/strip-searches.html">strip</a> and/or cavity searches. These numberings have been replaced recently by a more sophisticated barcode labeling system. International activists and Palestinians from the Diaspora who use Ben Gurion Airport on their way to the West Bank for solidarity activism and work, usually face long interrogations that may end up in <a target="_blank" href="http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-07-08/israel-bars-entry-to-85-pro-palestinian-activists-at-airport.html">denying their entry.</a></p></div>

 <p>If a leader can recognize that the struggle for human rights is indeed a comprehensive struggle that includes LGBT issues and goes beyond them, then it should be obvious that participating in an LGBTQ Youth Leaders Summit in Tel Aviv is <a target="_blank" href="http://electronicintifada.net/comment/213#.Tp_8WJxHBNk">not a leadership quality</a>. A human rights leader would never publicly support the army and army conscription, as IGY has, when this army is occupying an indigenous population, especially with the knowledge that conscripts who refuse to serve in the occupation army are punished. How can fighting for LGBTQ equality within the army be a tool to peace and equality, when the army is inherently a violent institution? A leader should be able to recognize and act upon pressing realities of structural inequality. Social change cannot be dependent on the vision of a few leaders, or on single-issue identity politics. If the fight for LGBTQ equality is truly "part of a wider struggle for human rights", then LGBTQ-identified people must not let their identities and lives be used to divert attention from this larger struggle.</p>

 <p>Not surprising, where else could the summit possibly be held? Israel invested heavily in recruiting gays from across the world to visit the sunny beaches of Tel Aviv and the city's hottest gay nightclubs. Little do tourists know, the city's popular strip of hotels and beaches are actually <a target="_blank" href="http://www.hybridstates.com/2011/05/israels-independence-day-celebrated-literally-on-top-of-a-demolished-palestine/">built on the ruins</a> of Manshiyya, a residential neighborhood partially destroyed 1948, and then razed to the ground in the 1960s, in order to build a central business district, beaches and hotels. Supplanting Palestinian life with Israel's tourism industry exemplifies gay tourism as part of a larger campaign to distract Western observers from Israeli state violence. Supporting Tel Aviv's tourist industry also feeds into the brutal gentrification of the historic town of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.wsws.org/articles/2011/mar2011/jaff-m05.shtml">Yaffa</a>, once a thriving port city out of which Tel Aviv was constructed, now a neglected neighborhood that is better seen as a cluster of Arab ghettos, where less than 5% of the original inhabitants live. Tourism helps the state to dig its claws deeper into Israel's indigenous community and it's vital that queers be aware of this.</p></div>

Far from "adventurous," outdoor life is mired in <a target="_blank" href="http://www.btselem.org/freedom_of_movement">movement restrictions</a>, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.imemc.org/article/47428">humiliations</a> at <a target="_blank" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Xvftwf800E/TfvPezBS9mI/AAAAAAAAApg/HyZUu_XZui0/s1600/Copy%2Bof%2BPECDAR_Check%2Bpoints_WestBank2%2Bcopy-1.jpg">checkpoints</a>, an expansion of the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.ir-amim.org.il/Eng/?CategoryID=173">apartheid wall</a>, and "Israeli Only" roads that whirl through the entire <a target="_blank" href="http://www.stopthewall.org/updated-anti-apartheid-wall-campaign-poster-map">West Bank</a>. This "outdoor challenge" faced by Palestinians has nothing to do with strengthening social skills, problem solving, or teamwork. It rather causes problems that affect daily life to such an extent that life is put on hold, and people are cut off from their land and their families. While you enjoy your camp-site lunch, people in Gaza are cut off from proper access to <a target="_blank" href="http://uk.news.yahoo.com/u-n-experts-israels-blockade-gaza-illegal-170333368.html">food</a>. Your camping trip will be fun, but ask any Palestinian refugee what it is really <a target="_blank" href="http://www.ifamericaknew.org/cur_sit/ref-halsell.html">like</a> to live in a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.passia.org/palestine_facts/MAPS/Refugees-UNWRA-2001.html">camp</a> for the last 63 years. </p>

 <p>Jerusalem is "a paradigm for a cosmopolitical city", according to IGY, who chose to ignore the illegal <a target="_blank" href="http://www.icahd.org/">house demolitions</a> and stifling <a target="_blank" href="http://anamericaninpalestine.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/separation_barrier_map_eng.jpg">Apartheid wall</a> through which Palestinians residing in Jerusalem were made refugees for the third time since 1948. Rapid construction of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/17/east-jerusalem-settlement_n_1016446.html">Jewish-only settlements in East Jerusalem</a> since 1967 has forced Palestinian residents out of the city in droves and severely restricted Palestinian movement in and out of the fenced-in town. Coupled with the residency revocations of thousands of East Jerusalem Palestinians, what Israeli human rights group B'Tselem has called a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.btselem.org/jerusalem/revocation_of_residency">"policy of quiet deportation"</a>, the demolitions and settlement construction form part of a larger policy of ethnicly cleansing of Arab East Jerusalem with the hopes of annexing it to a future Israeli capital.</p> </div>

In the last 63 years, the Knesset passed over 70 laws discriminating against Palestinians living in Israel and the West Bank. Most recent are the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/knesset-passes-two-bills-slammed-as-discriminatory-by-rights-groups-1.351462">Nakba law</a> and anti-BDS bill. While the Nakba law bans any reference to the dispossession of Palestinians, the new <a target="_blank" href="http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/israel-passes-law-banning-calls-for-boycott-1.372711">anti-BDS bill</a> authorizes any group to sue damages of up to NIS 30,000 from anyone who incites for or launches a boycott, without having to prove that damage was indeed caused.</p></div>

 <p>Because Abu Ghosh is one of the few Arab villages that Israelis feel "comfortable" visiting, the summit dinner plans are not surprising. Abu Gosh - one of the only Palestinian and Arab villages that were not destroyed in the 1948 Nakba - became the symbol of token coexistence between Arabs and Israelis. Based on appropriating food and exoticizing the village's culture, this dynamic reduces the unbearable conditions of Palestinians living in Israel to a taste of Hummos. These "authentic dinners" reinforce the denial surrounding Israeli society and its role in colonization and in institutionalized discrimination against Palestinians. It is misleading, as tourists and Israelis live out the fantasy that Palestinians and Israelis can and do live together-- a romantic picture that is far from reality.</p>

Israel has worked to annihilate Palestinian narratives on multiple fronts, ranging from the bombing of <a target="_blank" href="http://electronicintifada.net/content/why-would-israel-bomb-university/7887#.Tp71SZxHBNk">universities</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/features/was-the-gaza-school-bombed-by-iaf-a-legitimate-target-1.274828">schools</a> in the West Bank and Gaza to the exclusion of mentions of Palestinian dispossession from the Israeli public school system, 25 percent of which comprises Palestinian students. With a lecture by Likud Party member Gideon Sa'ar (the second man on the list after Benjamin Netanyahu), we can be sure that education will be used in the summit as a tool for propaganda.</p>

A march, filled with hollow human rights statements and creating the illusion of queer paradise island, far removed from hard-hitting realities, for an LGBT leaders summit in Tel Aviv - how very grassroots, political and radical, IGY.
