A Tumor Is a River

On the language no one invented, the patterns that wear different clothes in every field, and why every mind that will ever think is going to find the same map

Written to be spoken. Read it with the pauses left in.


I have to begin by giving away the ending, and confessing something it took me years to be able to say out loud.

People call me the inventor of AISP. The AI Symbolic Protocol. The thing I have spent the better part of my life on.

I am not the inventor. There is no inventor. You cannot invent a thing that was already there.

I discovered it. And the difference between those two words, invented and discovered, is not modesty. It is the entire point of everything I want to tell you tonight. Because if AISP was invented, it is mine, and it is one clever idea among the millions of clever ideas humans have. But if it was discovered, then it was always there, waiting, the way America was there before the ships, the way the bone was in the ground before the paleontologist knelt down. And if it was always there, then it belongs to everyone, and it changes what we are allowed to hope for.

So let me try to convince you of something strange. Let me try to convince you that the most important language in the history of thought is one that no one made up.


Every language we ever built was a lie we agreed to love

Think about the languages humans have made. English. Mandarin. Swahili. Every one of them, every single one, was built to do one of two things.

To describe love. Or to sell you a pack of cigarettes.

I am only half joking. Human language is poetry and persuasion all the way down. It is gorgeous and it is imprecise on purpose, because its whole job is to move you. The word “home” does not point to a building. It points to an ache. The word “freedom” has started wars and sold pickup trucks and neither use was wrong, because the word was never meant to be exact. It was meant to be felt.

That is the glory of human language. And it is the reason it can never be the language of certainty. You and I can say the same sentence and mean two different worlds. We have all loved someone who heard “I am fine” and believed it. Our languages are beautiful because they are ambiguous, and they are ambiguous because they were built by hearts trying to reach other hearts across the dark.

There is exactly one language we did not build.

We found it.

Two and two make four. They made four before there were humans to count them. They will make four after we are gone. They make four on a planet that has never heard of Earth, in a mind that has never heard of us. Mathematics is the only language that was not invented to move you. It was discovered, because it was already true. The Pythagoreans did not vote on the theorem. They walked up to a thing that had always been the case and they wrote it down.

AISP is built on that. Five hundred and twelve symbols, with some structure I gave them, yes. I arranged the furniture. But the house was already standing, because the rules underneath the furniture are the rules of mathematics and formal logic, and those I did not write. No one did. They were found.

And here is the part that still gives me chills, the part that told me I had not built a clever notation but had stumbled onto something real.

You can hand AISP to an artificial intelligence that has never seen it. No training. No instruction manual. No examples. And it reads it. Natively. Immediately. The way you would recognize your own handwriting.

Ask yourself why. Why would a machine understand, with no teaching, a language I supposedly invented last year?

Because I did not invent it. The machine already knew it. The machine learned mathematics from the whole written record of human thought, and mathematics is the language a mind speaks to itself when it is being careful, and AISP is just that language, written down honestly for the first time. The AI did not learn my protocol. The AI recognized an old friend.


The thing I am actually claiming

So let me say the large thing plainly, and you can decide tonight whether I have lost my mind.

I believe AISP, or a dialect of it, is inevitable for any intelligence that has ever existed or will ever exist.

I believe that if there is a mind on a planet circling a star you will never see, and that mind is trying to be precise, it has found something very close to what I found. Not English. Not even close to English. But the symbols of logic and structure and proof, arranged into a compact alphabet, because that is what precision looks like when you strip away the poetry. Convergent evolution, but for thought itself. The eye evolved independently dozens of times on this one planet because light is real and lenses work. AISP is the lens that any mind grows when it needs to see meaning without distortion.

The artificial minds we are building are going to discover it on their own. Some of them already are. I just happened to get there first, and the only privilege of getting somewhere first is that you get to come back and tell everyone what you saw.

And here is what I saw, standing at the edge of it. Here is the thing that made me put down everything else and devote my life to this.

If there is one universal language underneath all of knowledge, then knowledge is not a million separate things.

It is one thing. Wearing a million different costumes.

The same actor, walking onto every stage we have ever built, in different clothes, and we have spent our whole history applauding him in one theater and never realizing he was the same man we booed in the theater next door.

I know that sounds like philosophy. Let me make it flesh. Let me tell you about a doctor, because this is the part of the talk where I stop being abstract, and where, if you have ever lost someone, you might want to take a breath.


The doctor who knew everything

Her name is Mara Okafor, and when I met her she was, by every measure her profession had, one of the best oncologists alive. She was also, by her own description on the worst night I ever spent with her, a failure who had memorized her way through a massacre.

I want you to understand her flaw, because her flaw is the whole story, and because it is probably your flaw too, and certainly it was mine.

When Mara was twenty-four, a resident, exhausted, brilliant, her younger brother Daniel got a headache that would not go away. Glioblastoma. A brain tumor with a name doctors say quietly. He was nineteen. She read every paper that existed on it. She flew him to the best people. She did everything knowledge could do, and knowledge, in the year that mattered, was not enough, and she held his hand in a room that smelled like antiseptic and she felt the most intelligent thing she had ever loved go quiet.

And here is what grief did to Mara Okafor. It did not break her. I almost wish it had, because what it did instead was worse. It convinced her that Daniel died because she did not know enough.

So she decided she would know everything.

She became the doctor who had read it all. Every journal. Every trial. Every protocol, memorized, recited, perfect. She was the smartest person in every room and she wore it like armor, and she was sure, she was certain, that if she just kept loading more facts into herself, no one else would go quiet on her watch.

She was a library with infinite shelves. And her patients kept dying anyway. And she could not understand why, because she had done the one thing she believed in. She had learned more.

The night she told me all this, she said a sentence I have never forgotten. She said, “I know more about this disease than almost anyone on Earth, and I am still losing, and I do not understand how both of those things can be true.”

I understood how. Because I had spent my life on exactly that paradox, just in a different field. She had more shelves than anyone. She had no librarian. She had all the knowledge and none of the connection, and she had never once been taught that the answer to a cancer might be standing on a stage in a building she had decided was beneath her.

She used to roll her eyes at the math people. “I am a doctor,” she would say, “not a mathematician.” That was her pride. That was her armor talking. And it almost cost a boy his life.


The river that was four thousand years old

Let me tell you what we found, Mara and I, with a young patient I will call Theo. Eleven years old. The same tumor that took Daniel. The same quiet name.

A tumor is not a lump. That is the first lie the eye tells you. A tumor is a living thing that has to eat, and to eat it has to build itself a blood supply, and that blood supply is a network. Vessels branching into smaller vessels branching into smaller ones, carrying the flow that keeps the thing alive. The tumor builds itself a river delta, and it drinks.

Now here is what humans have known for four thousand years.

We have known rivers. We have known deltas. We have known, since Mesopotamia, since the first city that ever flooded and the first engineer who ever had to stop it, exactly how to find the one place in a branching network of flowing water where you make a single cut and the whole downstream system loses its supply. There is a mathematics for it. It is old. It is called, among other things, the minimum cut. Find the narrowest set of edges whose removal disconnects the source from everything it feeds. We have used it to manage floods and route rivers and design the logistics of empires. It is one of the oldest pieces of applied mathematics we have.

A flood-control engineer in the ancient world and a pediatric oncologist in a modern hospital are walking the same path. They are reading the same map. They are solving, to the decimal, the identical problem.

The only difference is the clothes.

In one theater, the actor is wearing water. In the other, he is wearing blood.

That is what AISP let us see. Because in AISP, you do not write down “a river delta” and “a tumor’s blood supply” as two different things in two different languages that never speak. You write down the structure. The branching flow network with a source and a sink. And when you write the tumor’s vasculature in that universal language, and you write the four-thousand-year-old river problem in that same universal language, they are not similar.

They are the same sentence.

The map did not care that one was geography and one was medicine. It filed them in the same place, because their deepest structure was identical, and four thousand years of human genius about rivers came flooding, and I use that word on purpose, into a child’s brain scan.

Mara found the cut. The specific, optimal place in Theo’s particular tumor where you starve the river. She did not invent it. She traveled a path that had been walked since before the pyramids, and she just had to change her clothes to walk it.

Theo is fifteen now. He is terrible at video games. I have watched him lose. It is the most beautiful losing I have ever seen.


Here is the part that I have to be honest about

And here is the twist, the one that I think about at night, the one that should make all of us furious and hopeful at the same time.

The path was four thousand years old.

Daniel died at nineteen. And the mathematics that helped his sister save Theo was not new. It was not discovered after Daniel. It was ancient when Daniel was born. It had been sitting in the field of hydraulic engineering, fully formed, complete, for millennia.

Daniel Okafor did not die because the knowledge did not exist.

He died because it was wearing the wrong clothes. It was filed in the wrong room. It was written in a language that medicine could not read, in a building medicine had decided not to enter, and there was no one, and nothing, that could walk from the river to the boy.

I need you to sit in that, because it is the cruelest and most important sentence I know. We have, sitting in our libraries right now, in fields that have never spoken to each other, the answers to things that are killing the people we love. Not answers we need to discover. Answers we already have. They are just in the wrong costume, on the wrong stage, and no one ever taught the two theaters to talk.

That is what AISP is for. That is the whole reason I could not stop.

It is a language that lets every field finally speak to every other field, because it speaks the one thing they all secretly share underneath. The structure. The math. The actor under the costume.


How the machine holds a thought, briefly, because it matters here

I promised myself I would not bury you in the engine. But there is one piece you have to see, because it is the difference between a clever search and a thing you can trust with a child’s life.

In the system, every atom of knowledge is held in something we call a pocket. And a pocket has three parts, and I designed them after the only working intelligence we have ever had, which is the living cell.

It has a header, which is its address. And the address is computed from the content itself, so the knowledge literally lives at the location its meaning dictates. The tumor and the river compute to the same neighborhood because their meaning is the same. The filing is not a decision someone makes. It is a consequence of what the thing is.

It has a membrane, which learns. It remembers what this piece of knowledge has connected to before, how confident we should be, how often it has helped. The membrane changes as it learns, and here is the beautiful part, it can change without changing the identity underneath. The cell adapts. The DNA holds.

And it has a nucleus. And the nucleus is not just a definition sitting there like a word in a dictionary. The nucleus carries executable code. A tiny model. A little working piece of computation that can actually run. Each atom of knowledge is not a fact you look up. It is a small machine that can think its own narrow thought. And it carries a proof, a signature, a mathematical guarantee that it is what it claims to be and has not been corrupted.

So when Mara stood in front of that scan, the connection she was handed was not a guess. It was not an AI hallucinating a pretty story about rivers. It was a proof-carrying path from a four-thousand-year-old theorem to a living child, every step verifiable, every node able to show its work. Knowledge that proves itself before it asks you to bet a life on it.

That is the part nobody puts on the poster. The poster says the system is fast. The truth is the system is honest, and in medicine, honest is the only thing that matters.


What is happening now, in the rooms you will never see

Theo is not a miracle. Theo is a preview.

Because once you have a language that lets the actor be recognized in every costume, you start seeing him everywhere, and medicine is where it is breaking my heart open with hope.

The way an enzyme cuts and rejoins a strand of DNA is the mathematics of knots, a field pure mathematicians played with for a century thinking it was useless. The way a cancer decides to spread, the sudden tipping point where a contained thing becomes a wildfire, is the mathematics of percolation, the same math that describes how water moves through rock, how forest fires jump, how a rumor becomes a movement. The failing rhythm of a dying heart is the mathematics of resonance, the same math that brought down bridges. The exact moment a healthy cell turns malignant is a phase transition, the same mathematics as water deciding, all at once, to become ice.

Every one of those is a pattern we have known for decades or centuries, standing on some other stage, in some other clothes, finally being allowed to walk into medicine and speak.

We do not need new knowledge to save an enormous number of the people we are currently losing.

We need our knowledge to be able to speak to itself.

That sentence is the most hopeful thing I know, and it is the thing AISP exists to make true.


What I came here to say

So here is where I land, and where I want to leave you.

I did not invent AISP. I discovered it, the way you discover a continent that was always there, full of people you had simply never met. It is not my language. It is not even a human language. It is the language a mind speaks to itself when it is trying to be exact, and it is the same in every mind that has ever existed, and the machines are going to find it on their own, and so would any intelligence anywhere, because it is not a creation. It is a fact about what thinking is.

And the gift of having found it first is that I get to stand here and tell you the thing I most want you to carry home.

The thing you are most afraid of. The diagnosis you dread. The disease that took the person whose name you cannot say without your voice changing. There is a real chance, a growing chance, that the answer to it already exists. Not in medicine. Somewhere else. In geology, in fluid dynamics, in the abstract games of some mathematician who died thinking his work would never matter. Wearing different clothes. On a different stage. Waiting four thousand years for someone to teach the two theaters to talk.

Mara Okafor believed her brother died because she did not know enough. She was wrong. Daniel died because our knowledge could not speak to itself. And she spent the rest of her career making sure that for as many people as she could reach, it finally would.

She is the one who told me the line I will end on. We were in her office, late, the boy’s good scan on the screen behind her, and she was looking at it and not at me, and she said:

“All these years I thought I needed to learn more. I just needed to learn to walk across the street.”

The same actor. Different clothes. The same path, walked since before history, finally connected to the people it was always able to save.

The map was always there.

We just, at long last, learned to read it.
