Engineering a Culture of Psychological Safety

There's no Iron Throne in Team - Engineering a Culture of Psychological Safety

Abstract: Are your teams safe? Do your teammates have your back? The #1 indicator of a successful team is not team size, tenure, seniority or salary level, but Psychological Safety. Unsafe teams will break or dramatically under-perform. This highly interactive and sometimes introspective session will teach tools and techniques that you can apply within your team to increase psychological safety. Come learn your own dominant communication style and how to recognize it in others to help build safe, collaborative, productive teams.

TALK DESCRIPTION: The #1 indicator of a successful team is not team size, tenure, seniority or salary level, but Psychological Safety. We will start by learning the five effectiveness pillars of a psychologically safe team thru a constellation activity. Examples of how team members responded to an unsafe environment will be explored. We'll have an interactive DiSC activity to learn our dominant communication and coaching style and conclude with a Personal User Manual.

Learning objectives:

  • Discover your own dominant communication and coaching style.
  • Recognize others’ dominant communication styles using the DISC model.
  • Assess psychological safety of a team by asking questions
  • Recognize and describe our own work style, preferences, values, and quirks.

Inspired by:

Project Aristotle article about a safe team and how the newbie got crushed by an unsafe team. Explore what happened with the context of their newly learned skills and vocabulary. and call out what could've, should've been done to have Karen's back from the beginning.

Exploring DISC activity -> translate personal user manual to behavior style and show the group how to suss out the other types and still be heard.

Personal user manual -> spurs introspection and sets a tone of looking within first. Sort of ties in with Curtis's "Platinum Rule" about treating people the way that they want to be treated.

Spend the last quarter to third with the Constelllation exercise for the psychological pillars.
