Coding-agent toolkit — curated tips

Pragmatic notes I keep reusing when working with coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.). Three kinds of artifact in this gist:

  1. Tools the agent (or you) invoke from the shell.
  2. Skills — short architectural patterns the agent should follow.
  3. Cheatsheets — condensed reference for a specific library, loaded from upstream source via opensrc.

Fetch package source code into a global cache so coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) can read real implementations instead of guessing from docs.

1. Plan Mode Default

  • Enter plan mode for ANY non-trivial task (3+ steps or architectural decisions)
  • If something goes sideways, STOP and re-plan immediately – don't keep pushing
  • Use plan mode for verification steps, not just building
  • Write detailed specs upfront to reduce ambiguity

2. Subagent Strategy

  • Use subagents liberally to keep main context window clean
  • Offload research, exploration, and parallel analysis to subagents
  • For complex problems, throw more compute at it via subagents
