Courage to Change is an augmented reality art installation created by Aaron Eichorst and Billy Hunt for Let There Be Light in Charlottesville, VA

Artist Statement

For the butterfly, a chrysalis is the stage of life for undergoing transformation. Caterpillars retreat from an existence of consumption, peeling away their immature skins to expose a fragile but protective casing wherein a radical restructuring takes place. The caterpillars' internal tissues are actually dissolved and reorganized. This comprehensive process is essential for the adult to emerge and complete its life cycle.

We feel the chrysalis serves as an apt metaphor for the current state of our society and nation. More and more people are beginning to awaken to the challenges that we face; social inequities, racial injustices, a climate crisis and the desecration of the natural world. We stand at a crossroads. Will we step up to the challenges before us? Are we courageous enough to change the structures within our systems and institutions? What might emerge if we do?
