The pros and gons of the GNOME desktop environment, in my view...

#Pros and cons of GNOME, in my view

##Pros

  • Pretty customizable
  • Ubuntu...
  • Is it just me, or does Chrome font render really nice in GNOME?

##Cons:

  • GDM interface (login screen) is disgusting
  • "Show Applications" interface is horrible
  • I have tried "Simple Dock", "Docky", "Plank" and "Dash to Dock". I cannot make any of them look how I want them to, and I do not think any of them work as well as Unity's.
  • You have to use a custom theme. Most themes are not comprehensive. Ideally, you want a consistent shell, window and GTK+ theme but they are rare. The few that you can find have things I dislike and I cannot be bothered learning how to make themes.
  • The top bar icons are fucked and I cannot find a way to make them work nicely
  • Notifications are obtrusive
  • The "Messages" interface is ugly and obscures most docks.
  • Generally irksome characteristics e.g. when you press Windows Key + L to lock the screen, the screen locks and them immediately dims.
  • You cannot shut down the PC from the login screen, which is infuriating to me!!!!!!!!!

I feel like GNOME, in general, seems to be tailored for touch screen, similar to Windows 8 and Windows 8 sucks.

"Go back to Unity, kid". I dunno. I might. You cannot customize it for shit, though and I do not like to support Canonical.
