Hurricane Hackers ignite presentation
Last year, the Red Hook Initiative and the Open Technology Institute started to build a mesh network in Red Hook as a local community project. Today, it's being used to assist with the disaster response effort in Red Hook and to give local residents Internet access they still don't have. More info.
I built an on-floor mesh network here at ITP with the same equipment and software as the Red Hook mesh for this weekend's hackathon. The Red Hook mesh network needs help developing software and scripts to enhance its services and to assist the field team building and maintaining the mesh.
Adapt/build a data gathering mechanism to get a sense of usage across the mesh.
- Who's connected, where, and with what device types: android, ipod, computer, etc.
- Measure bandwidth per user.

This will help the mesh designers learn how their network is being used and inform how they can build out the network further.
Overlay mesh node data onto a local neighborhood mapping platform running on the Red Hook mesh called Tidepools.

Resources:
- Adapt/build a mechanism to deploy new software across the mesh.
- Red Hook Initiative: community center in Red Hook we are helping and wants the mesh network
- Commotion Wireless: software platform for building the mesh network (code page)
- Open Technology Institute: non-profit that sponsors Commotion and works with Red Hook Initiative
- OpenWrt: router firmware that Commotion is built from
- OLSR: mesh routing algorithm that Commotion uses
