Worthwhile noting:
The BBC's announcement has been quietly edited to include the following two things:
I'm in the UK. Why am I presented with BBC Audio instead of BBC Sounds?
It is likely you are using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and are accessing BBC.com, which is intended for audiences outside the UK. If you disable your VPN, you should be redirected back to bbc.co.uk, intended for UK users.
...and, perhaps more excitingly...
BBC’s UK national music stations are available to listeners in certain countries outside the UK through TuneIn.
The latter would suggest that TuneIn will continue to carry the stations in some form (but not local radio, nor 5 Live, both of which have gnarly rights issues to do with sports rights).
Case in point the excellent UK artist Sam Fender; I was first introduced to his talent snip
BBC Local radio, which I listen to all the time, is the only regular way I'm introduced to new music and artists. Radio has always and will always be the gateway drug and music companies need to help facilitate that by allowing radio platforms to no be encumbered by penny pinching, people don't discover music very much on Spotify and YouTube, sure you might get played a new track once when your playlist or album ends but you need 2-3 listens of pop music for it to catch.

I'll take what I can get :-) TuneIn.

I have set up a squid proxy on a vm at a small uk cloud provider (BrightBox, Leeds).
So at least can set up a Firefox profile using that proxy, whilst at the same time use another profile without a proxy for normal browsing of public and company (vpn) sources. Because using a vpn would be impossible on the company laptop.
Sad that the greedy record companies suddenly realise that internet radio has a global reach. Which I think is one of the greatest developments of the last decades. But for the record companies it’s an excuse to suddenly extort a lot more money from radio stations, because they can be listened to outside of their country of origin. Of course this levels out. For every French listener of British radio there are British listeners of French radio, and so on. But the big record labels don’t see it that way. They see it as an opportunity to squeeze more money out of internet radio stations.
Rusty took SomaFM dark to protest the 2007 attack by music companies on online radio stations.
Unfortunately the attack on global radio is not just greed right now and feels darker than 2007. I think it's important to keep this in mind that we must hold on to all kinds of public service broadcasting right now.

It's the local stations most would like to keep access to, would those still be available on TuneIn? They are at the moment. I just don't buy the rights argument, I just don't.
But it all does come down to money and we really need to be on guard to archive the last broadcasts at the moment. It feels off, the vibes are off.
Free the streams.
Something else has quietly appeared on the "BBC Sounds is closing down" FAQ...
What does this mean for third party platforms that previously carried BBC podcasts and audio?
These changes only impact BBC platforms, as BBC content will remain available on the same third-party platforms as before outside the UK.
So, after all this... while BBC Sounds may go away, it seems that you'll still be able to tune in on, say, TuneIn.
Just a quick reminder for those who are here for radio links and not discussions about Sounds and Tunein, etc. The links will likely change soon, but refer to https://radio.johnpenny.uk/tools/ if you want to build and test current links while the Gist owner is away. Make sure to save the page to your machine for future use, although it will chage in future it will provide info on how to build the links, and you can always refer back to the page for updates.
Sorry, I just don't think 'use tunein or sounds' is relevant to this gist, yet it takes up the entire thread below the fold right now, given the links have not yet been turned off. People are landing here looking for working links right now and not getting relevant info.
I'm not sure the streaming links will ever truly go away as third parties need them to make their services work. But it looks to be the cat chasing its own tail with these CDN links.
But as a general listener I followed this advice from the BBC. "We believe that accessing content through BBC Sounds provides audiences with the best experience".
I'd love to get radio back on my radio. The only sensible solution I can see is to try to hook TuneIn into an icecast server and serve my own stream links (I become my own third party provider).
If you came here looking for working radio urls / links, please note that a large part of this very long thread (everything other than the very latest posts) is now hidden above the "fold".

To read the (most useful) parts of this thread which are hidden above the "fold", use this link:
That link will take you back to a fairly recent point in the discussion at which you should begin to find links which are currently working. It is probably not worth reading posts made before that point, as recent changes to the radio urls have made earlier information mostly useless now.

To read this thread from the very beginning, open this link:
These links should never be used for commercial purposes, or the stream content re-used without permission from the BBC. You should only be using these links for private listening. All of the linked media streams are owned, licensed, and controlled by the BBC. If someone is charging money for these streams, you should report it to the BBC.
@johnpenny question: Where does one source the "3441A116-B12E-4D2F-ACA8-C1984642FA4B" pool value format from? Is there a way to covert that to and from "pool_904", for example?
@hchorey That is the pool for the BBCi link. From bbc.com or sounds. Different from the CDN pool.
Ok, gotcha. Since that is one of the basis for your link generation tool, I wasn't sure if that was a top-level "key" that correlated to an encoded pool for each stream or not. :)
Anyone else finding that the @johnpenny Radio 3 link drops out after a few minutes?
@R101G Can you post the link?
Either of these links. Two of us are having the same trouble, both in the UK, and the time to cut off seems random.
@R101G What player are you using?
Using rAudio player, which is MPD-based. I did notice it produces 32 bit samples from the BBC stream, which seems unnecessary :)
I am noticing occasional tiny glitches on R3 Unwind, which are beginning to annoy me. Playing on a Cambridge Audio CXN v2, via MinimServer. Listening in the UK on http://lstn.lv/bbcradio.m3u8?station=bbc_radio_three_unwind&bitrate=320000&uk=1.
I listened this afternoon and it was stable: http://as-hls-ww.live.cf.md.bbci.co.uk/pool_23461179/live/ww/bbc_radio_three/bbc_radio_three.isml/dash/bbc_radio_three-audio=96000.norewind.m3u8
It is now standard to pass around floating-point audio for maximum accuracy in DSP. Foobar only outputs 32-bit on new Windows WASAPI. ASIO only accepts 32-bit integer typically. Windows can apply a limiter if it receives samples over maximum, although it usually does more harm than good in practice.
I listened to The Magic Flute on BBC Radio 3 this evening - no obvious problems.

Raspberry Pi4 with Volumio v3.799 using IQAudio DAC Pro hat
Some earlier versions of volumio used to produce 'random' dropouts of BBC streams - perhaps 2 or 3 in an hour or sometimes none at all. This problem seems to have been resolved in the most recent updates.
Thanks for the replies. It looks like it might just be that the player has a problem with those particular streams. Perhaps a buffer size setting.
@j7nj7n The 32 bit output would be decided by the AAC decoder?
Yes, the decoder has to support it. Usually the bit depth is reduced at the exit from the player. With AAC and MP3 you can reduce the level by like a hundred decibels and recover it again. A bit less with FFMPEG because they go for maximum speed. 32-bit can capture that. Only very old decoders or on small portable players used fewer bits.
@j7nj7n A bit off-topic now, but there seems little point encoding a 16 bit file using lossy compression and decoding it to 24 or 32 bits. I2s does not indicate the bit depth, so a player without a consistent 16 bit output can be a nuisance. Any processing software will increase the bit depth if it needs to, and then dither it down. Most BBC listeners don't use a mixing desk.
More than 16 bits can go into an AAC encoder. I don't know how many BBC uses, as that information is not preserved. It probably differs between station, as some locals are quite crunchy. The encoder will do its best to preserve as many as it can at any given moment. You get something like an adaptive window around the current loudness level. Fades could theoretically be encoded to very low levels accurately. Your player should dither down once at the end of the signal chain to as many bits as are supported or chosen.

Like Trump; they folded.
> This is simply being driven from two immovable facts:
a) the BBC wishes to earn ad revenue from non-UK audiences (to help pay for the programming)
b) the BBC cannot put advertising on anything that offers rights-encumbered output like music radio, without paying full price for those rights.
I used to listen to (Australia) Nova radio through their own ios app when I was in Belgium.
This worked well for many months until they went for Geo-IP based at streams. Overnight all the local Aussie ads that were in English were now in French and completely useless to me. So, I stopped listening to that app and change to a direct M3U stream. A few months later I did go to Myers and buy something! :-)
The English language adverts were useful to me given the amount of times that I fly back and forth to my family in Australia.
The GeoIP based advertisements were unusable because wherever I was in the world these were read out in languages that I didn't understand, and had no intentional of understanding, and sold products that were meaning this to me.
If emigrants are not their target audience for local radio content, then who is? Are foreigners with no UK connection interested in what happens in Wales or in an English county like Berks., or Surrey?
