How to save and play Wordle offline

Today, Wordle was bought by the New York Times.

I'm happy for the creator! I'm also worried about NYTimes screwing it up, paywalling it, etc.

Fortunately, Wordle is a pretty self-contained game, and has a daily puzzle until 2026!¹ To archive a copy of Wordle for offline play:

1. File -> Save Page As...
2. Select "Web Page, Complete" from the dropdown, and save where you like
3. Launch the game by opening that page from your computer.

Transfer game state

To copy over your play history (these instructions are for Firefox. Others have written Chrome instructions that I haven't tested):

1. Go to original Wordle site, assuming it's still available.
2. Right click anywhere and click "Inspect".
3. Select the "Storage" tab.
4. On the left sidebar, expand "Local Storage" and select the powerlanguage entry.
5. Note the rows for gameState and statistics.
6. In a separate tab, repeat steps 2-4 for your local copy of Wordle.
7. Copy over the gameState and statistic rows from the original site to the local copy.

Notes for the Future

If the original Wordle site is no longer available, it should still be archivable from https://web.archive.org/web/20220131214952id_/https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/ .

Note that in some browsers, running a saved website from a local file is unsafe in a way viewing that same website from its ordinary origin is not. Do NOT read this thread in 6 months and go download something claiming to be a Wordle archive. Trust only what you saved yourself.
