Professional Development

Career Development Reflections

1. I believe my greatest strength is my objective/analytical thinking style. I believe this because it is one of the results that I expected prior to the Pairin survey. This thinking style is something that is integrated into all aspects of my life. It is how I approach problems in both the personal and professional realms.
2. I work best when given a precise goal, any critical constraints, and free reign to accomplish that goal within those constraints. I also find that it is easiest for me to concentrate when I am immersed in learning/accomplishing specific tasks. I recently have had a lot of projects going on in both my professional and personal life. Being torn in that many directions, without any respite I would definitely say adversely impacts my ability to produce in all areas. If anything, this has taught me that forcing myself to find down time is going to be vital to my success. I also believe that turning my focus to accomplishing tasks rather than obsessing about the sheer amount of items on my plate is a better area to sequester my attention, and thus will lead to a more productive self.
3. My greatest area of improvement according to Pairin is Descision Making. I think the Top Down Design concept we covered in Mod 0 is going to be beneficial in developing this skill. Kind of like I referred to above, I think I sometimes get overwhelmed so much by the scope of a project that deciding where to start becomes an insurmountable task. If I can really make strides in this arena within the scope of decision making in regards to programming; I hope it will be a skill I can transfer into other areas of my life as well.
4. I hope to maximize my strengths while in software development by being aware of how my mind works. I hope to remember to approach problem solving while utilizing/building upon my current strengths. I hope to also support my strenghts by developing skills in my areas of improvement. Programming is largely based on logic lines, and I think my analytical mind will be a good fit. Creativity is not a skill I have fostered, which is why I elected to undertake Front-End Development. I hope someday to be a full stack developer, and I think Front End is the area I will need the most help in because it utilizes so much creativity vs. the more logic leaning back end developing.
5. Knowing about my strengths and weaknesses will benefit me as a software developer because it will allow me to utilize my strengths while problem solving, and it makes me cognizant of the areas that will be useful to my career but will require active engagement to develop. Knowing how I work best will allow me to tailor my agenda to my strengths. The focus on professional development at Turing will also help me evaluate my working preferences for efficiency drains. I hope to learn some work flow processes that are similar to my current working preferences, but may prove to be better practices.
