Timestamp junior/senior what topics (or specific people)_ are you particularly interested in hearing about this semester? are there any topics (or specific people) you would NOT be interested in hearing about? Feel free to add any other questions, comments, or suggestions, if you have any If you'd like to identify yourself, feel free, if not, no problem

8/28/2025 16:31:20 Junior anything adjacent to natural sciences, and limitations of applied math/mathematical modeling (i.e. things to be careful of). physics [email protected]
8/28/2025 16:34:46 Senior maybe something similar to topics from Persuasion at Scale -- use of stats or computing in contemporary politics I know the syllabus is old, but just to clarify, the room is 428 Pupin (what Vergil says) and not 501 Noco (what the syllabus says), right?
8/28/2025 16:40:47 Junior I would really enjoy learning more about topics in systems biology!! (I feel like my other classes don’t often show applications in this field so it would be fun to have more exposure to that). I’m also super interested in hearing more about applications in optics/imaging technologies, as I am a huge fan of the math+ physics behind developments like MRI :) I’m a little less interested in purely financial mathematics, but I’m not picky and there’s a lot for me to learn from every speaker/topic!! [email protected]
8/28/2025 17:08:29 Senior Sports Analytics (I really enjoyed last year's) Quantitative Finance Biology [email protected]
8/28/2025 17:18:28 Senior Physics and AI and Quantum B2B stuff [email protected]
8/28/2025 17:26:13 Junior Probably more mathematical modeling. I am especially interested in the cross section between applied math and climate science.
8/28/2025 18:31:58 Senior Math & Gaming, like how u structure game data to balance the system Are there any milestone guides for the seniors?
8/28/2025 18:56:01 Senior AI, ML, NLP, DL, NN, LLMs [email protected]
8/28/2025 19:11:14 Junior Climate science: especially oceanography, remote sensing, earth system modeling. I'd be especially excited if we can have Prof. Adam Sobel, Prof. Michael Tippett, Prof. Alexey Kaplan, Prof. Mingfang Ting, or essentially anyone from Lamont. A particular relevant division at Lamont to applied math is the "Ocean and Climate Physics" (OCP) division, where lots of profs work on modeling the atmosphere and the ocean using applied math and/or stats techniques. Personally I'm not a big fan of bio/bio-med because it requires too much background knowledge and vocab to understand the methodology. Within 1 hour I think it'll be hard for any non-bio/bio-med student to fully understand the applied math aspect used in the bio-related research because of this vocab barrier. However, I understand that many students at Columbia are very interested in this field so if lots of them push for guest speakers long these lines then I can totally understand. 1) I'm wondering if we may skip 1 seminar for the semester, just in case we are truly truly not interested in the subject? 2) If there can be a list of subjects/titles of presentations posted for all seminars for the semester at some point so we'll know what is the theme of any given class's presentation, that'll be really helpful! Thank you so much for putting everything together! [email protected]

8/28/2025 20:37:08 Junior Applied math in quant trading (how it’s used), applied math in real world contexts (the question of whether it can be used to simulate/predict real world occurrences), People who studied apma without being good at math at first

8/29/2025 0:57:12 Senior I was wondering if it might be possible to invite some guest lecturers from CBS, like Michael Gatto, for example. I’m particularly interested in researching credit and fixed income derivatives, and I think having guest speakers would provide valuable first-hand exposure.
8/29/2025 1:01:22 Junior Machine learning focused topics. Probability ideas and AI. Numerical methods PDEs and ODEs
8/29/2025 1:29:11 Junior Applied math in finance, further explaining how an AMath degree provides career/focus options separate from a pure Math degree

8/29/2025 11:44:57 Junior I would love to realize what applied mathematics is really about and how I can use it in a financial world primarily. Otherwise, I'm not picky, I'm open to learning about new topics and seeing what interests me the most! [email protected]

8/29/2025 22:53:44 Senior Differential geometry, biophysics, cell structure modeling, ML in finance No I have already started working on a project with a partner in advance. We're applying a computational neuroscience model that I was researching last semester to a financial context right now. I'd like to find a time for the two of us to run our idea(s) by you during the first week of school. I'll send you an email. Thank you! [email protected]
