You will be using these questions to help give your mentor a better idea of who you are and want to become as a developer! Please note, this is meant to be a starting point for building your norms with your mentor - you may need to adjust scheduling expecations, communication expectations, etc. when you start working with your mentor!
What is your preferred name?
- Colgan
What are your pronouns?
- He/Him
What did you do before Turing?
- I originally went to college for theatre arts, with a focus in acting. After that, I worked a handful of restaurant, retail, and service industry jobs. I eventually worked as a photographer for a few years, and for the last handful of years I’ve been working for a SAS (software as service) startup, doing customer/technical support and eventually moving into a position helping to manage SEO and Web Optimization for our clients.
What made you decide to come to Turing?
- I decided on Turing after feeling a general sense of aimlessness with career and jobs, and ultimately wanting to end up with a better long term career to be able to provide for my spouse and myself. I have a friend who did the FE program at Turing who landed an incredible job, and she completely sold me on the program.
What are you most excited about exploring in your career in tech?
- I’m most excited to move into a better long term career, and hopefully end up making enough money to help us feel more financially secure, and not live paycheck to paycheck. I’m also excited in general to learn an entirely new skill, something I haven’t done in a long time.
Please review the Mod 1 calendar for FE or BE when answering the following questions.
What are your preferred times of day to connect with your mentor? (Early evening, lunch, etc.)
- My preferred time of the day to connect would be in late afternoon/early evenings before dinner.
What are your known scheduling restrictions? (Family obligations, life obligations, etc.)
- I don’t have any HARD scheduling restrictions. I do like to enough time in the evening to be able to work/out or go for a walk/jog, and to be able to make dinner and eat with my spouse. But even these are flexible sometimes when they have to be.
What is your preferred method to connect with your mentor? (Slack? Email? Text?)
- Slack is great - email is fine too!
What is your preferred cadence for communication? Twice a week? Weekly?
-I think once a week is just fine as a start for cadence of communication
What time frame can you commit to acknowledging you have seen a message if you are too busy to send a detailed response?
- If I’m too busy to respond right away, I can say I’ve seen a message usually within 15-20 minutes of having received it.
What time frame can you commit to sending a detailed response to a message when time permits?
- Typically, I can send a detailed response with 30 minutes up to an hour after the initial message has been received.
What are the your technical strengths and areas for desired improvement?
- Well, I don’t really have programming proficiency yet. But right now I feel I am getting comfortable with the basics of Javascript, I’m really getting comfortable with the command line and the terminal in MacOS. I know I need tons of improvement in putting all the Javascript fundamentals together though.
Is there any specific technical topic that we should focus on this inning?
- I think a specific technical topic that would be helpful for a first review, is just a review of the different Javascript concepts discussed in Mod 0 and the beginning of Mod 1. I think just grasping the bigger picture is what I need to be able to know what tool to use in which specific scenario.
Are there any topics from last inning that we should focus on reviewing?
- One topic from Mod 0 I still need help with is Psuedocoding - it has been difficult for me to know what plain english steps to break a problem into, and I feel like it’s because I haven’t really understood the rules, or the tools available at my discretion. I understand the technical definition of psuedocoding, but just struggle to put it into a confident practice.
Do you have anything that your mentor should be aware of? (upcoming life events, concerns about the upcoming curriculum, job hunt, etc)
- I don’t have any upcoming events to be aware of at this time! I’m fully focused on school when it comes time to start.
What do I need when I get overwhelmed?
- When I get overwhelmed, I need a few moments to collect myself, figure out what the current priorities are, and break tasks up according to priority level. I also just need to stop, take a breath, and think my next steps through.
Who are your supports and resources for this inning?
- My biggest support is my amazing spouse. In addition, we’ve got my parents, and my spouse’s family who are all rooting for me, and providing support in whatever way that they can.
Be sure to include:
- Your name and pronouns
- Your program and cohort
- What you did before coming to Turing

Hey,
My name is Colgan Meanor (He/Him), I'm joining Mod 1 in a few weeks with the 2108 FE Program. I currently live in New Orleans, LA. For a little bit of my personal background - I'm from Alabama, have lived in Alabama, Florida, and now Louisiana. I've been working customer service related jobs mostly since I graduated from undergrad in 2016. My most recent job is one that I've been at for a few years now. I started there as a customer service rep, but ended up getting to learn about SEO, and help optimize SEO for our clients' websites. I have been feeling out a possible career change or move for a few years now. When Turing went fully remote in the last year, I realized now was the opportunity to do so. I'm really looking forward to starting at Turing, and meeting you (whoever you are) soon.
