- Preparation time: 40 minutes
- Total time: 3 hours
- Makes: ~50 portions
- 1kg caster sugar
- 250g butter
- 250ml (1 cup) milk
- ~400g (1 tin) condensed milk
- Grease a baking tray (over 1cm deep) with butter and place it on a heat-resistant surface (a folded kitchen cloth will do).
- Add the sugar, butter and milk to a large pan leaving plenty room for expansion and place on a medium-to-high heat, stirring occasionally until the butter has melted and the mixture begins to bubble.
- Stir continuously for 10 minutes, as the mixture takes on a light golden colour.
- Add the condensed milk, lower to a medium heat and continue stirring for another 15 minutes; the mixture will get slightly darker.
- Remove from the heat and stir the mixture vigorously for about 5 minutes, then carefully pour it out into the baking tray.
- Allow it to cool for about an hour, then take a knife and score the surface into bite-sized portions.
- After another hour or so, when the tablet has completely cooled, you can turn the tray out and break apart the pieces.
