description: Generate and rank short-form video hooks for a reel, then pick the strongest as the reel's scene-1 line. Triggers: "reel hook", "hook for my video", "hook my reel".
---
This is a real skill from The Content System, given away free. It's not a prompt or a checklist — it's the actual
reel-hookskill, unmodified, straight from the paid product. Drop it into Claude Code and it runs the same ranked-hook interview that writes scene 1 for every reel on my feed. Built by @buildwith.conrad.
Scene one is the whole reel. If the first second doesn't stop the scroll, nothing else you made gets watched — the best script in the world doesn't matter if nobody's still there to read it. Most people write one hook, feel unsure about it, and post it anyway.
This skill fixes that: give Claude your topic, audience, and desired action, and it writes 8-12 hooks spread across six proven frameworks, ranks them for scroll-stopping power, and hands you the exact on-screen headline + voiceover line to use. No guessing, no single-shot writing.
Claude Code (recommended):
- In your project, create the folder
.claude/skills/reel-hook/(make.claude/skills/first if it doesn't exist). - Save this file as
.claude/skills/reel-hook/SKILL.md. - Open Claude Code in that project and say: "hook my reel" or "reel hook". That's it.
No project / just trying it: paste everything below the ── SKILL ── line into any fresh Claude chat,
then give it your topic, audience, and what you want the viewer to do. Works standalone too.
Scene 1 is the whole reel. If the first second doesn't stop the scroll, nothing else gets watched. This skill produces a batch of strong hooks for ONE reel and picks the line that becomes the on-screen headline + first voiceover line. Base Claude only — conversation + a short written artifact. No external tools required.
- You have a topic for a reel and need its opening line.
- Comes before script-writing in the loop:
hook → script → build.
- Topic — what the reel is about (the tool/idea/result).
- Audience — who it's for (their level, what they already believe).
- Desired action — comment a keyword / save / follow / click. (Shapes the CTA later, but a hook that implies the payoff converts better.)
Produce 8–12 hooks, labeled by framework, spread across these — don't write 10 of one kind:
| Framework | Shape | Example pattern |
|---|---|---|
| constraint-reveal | name a hard limit, then break it | Claude can't X. Unless you Y. |
| contrarian | reject the common advice | Stop doing X. It's why Y. |
| curiosity-gap | tease a mechanism without revealing it | The one setting that 10×'d my X. |
| transformation | before → after, concrete | From X to Y in Z. |
| mistake / warning | the costly error they're making | You're losing X by doing Y. |
| number / proof | a hard, specific figure up front | I did X N times. Here's what worked. |
Hook craft rules (apply to every line):
- First 3 words carry it — front-load the tension, not the setup.
- Concrete > abstract — a number, a named tool, a specific pain. No "in today's world".
- One idea — a hook that needs a comma to explain itself is two hooks.
- Say-able in ~1.5s — it's a voiceover line and an on-screen headline at once. Short.
- Implied payoff — the viewer should feel "I need to see where this goes."
- No clickbait you can't pay off — the reel must deliver what the hook promises (trust).
- The 8–12 ranked hooks, each tagged with its framework and a one-line note on why it's strong (or weak). Rank by scroll-stopping power for the stated audience.
- The chosen scene-1 line — the single best hook, written verbatim as it will appear:
- the on-screen headline form (can be 2 lines, ALL-CAPS friendly), and
- the voiceover form (how it's spoken — usually the same, sometimes slightly fuller).
- If you're building a full reel, write both into a
NOTES.mdunder a## Hookheading so the next writing step can pick them up straight away.
reel-hook is one of six skills in The Content System — the full pipeline that takes a topic all
the way to a finished, on-brand, rendered reel:
reel-hook → reel-script → reel-build → render, in about fifteen minutes, in your own repo.
The whole system is live today at the founding price — $199, down from $249, ends tonight.
