- E is the thinnest string
- A is the second thinnest string
- D is the second thickest string
- G is the thickest string

Please observe that it is the position of the circle/ball of the note that determines in which string it will be played. The lowest notes go on the thickest string (G). The highest notes go on the thinnest string (E)
