#create the private key for the certificate (server.key)
openssl req -new -sha256 -nodes -out server.csr -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout server.key -config <(cat server.csr.cnf)

#generate server.crt
openssl x509 -req -in server.csr -CA ~/ssl/rootCA.pem -CAkey ~/ssl/rootCA.key -CAcreateserial -out server.crt -days 500 -sha256 -extfile v3.ext

#verify that you did everything right
openssl x509 -text -in server.crt -noout
