For some reason on my LG G Watch R the Google Play Services is so far out of date it can't update itself. Therefore I can't install apps aside from sideloading. I'm also restricted to Android SDK 25 and below, due to the age of the OS.
All I want from the smart watch is local music played to my bluetooth earphones for running. Once AsteroidOS has a local music player, that may be an alternative.
This should work on other older Wear devices too.
- Old smart watch
- Modern Android device to extract and push the old WearMedia Wear APK
- Some other PC to push music files via
adb
- Obtain an old version of the APK of WearMedia 1.5.5
https://wearmedia.en.uptodown.com/android/versions - Install WearMedia 1.5.5, allowing old versions etc
- Install from the Play Store 'Wear Installer 2'
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.freepoc.wearinstaller2
- Enable Developer Mode, ADB Debugging over Wifi
- Note the IP Address (leaving Developer menu item and going back in if Unavailable/Unknown)
- In Wear Installer 2 enter the IP address of the watch, Done
- Accept the debugging connection on the watch
- Under 'Installed apps' choose WearMedia, Install
- (Optional) Remove WearMedia 1.5.5 from the modern Android device
- Connect to the watch via ADB:
adb connect $ip - Push media files to
/sdcard/Music:adb push a.mp3 /sdcard/Music/
- Launch WearMedia
- Swipe to the left to browse files, navigating to
/sdcard/Musicif required - Confirm you're able to play media
- Disable Debugging (supposedly to preserve battery)
