I bundled these up into groups and wrote some thoughts about why I ask them!

If these helped you, I'd love to hear about it!! I'm on twitter @vcarl_ or send me an email [email protected]

Onboarding and the workplace

  • How long will it take to deploy my first change? To become productive? To understand the codebase?
  • What kind of equipment will I be provided? Will the company pay/reimburse me if I want something specific?

Strings

String.prototype.*

None of the string methods modify this – they always return fresh strings.

  • charAt(pos: number): string ES1

    Returns the character at index pos, as a string (JavaScript does not have a datatype for characters). str[i] is equivalent to str.charAt(i) and more concise (caveat: may not work on old engines).

Ocaml / functional programming

I'm taking down this post. I just posted this as a side comment to explain a sentence on my latest blog post. This wasn't meant to be #1 on HN to start a huge war on functional programming... The thoughts are not well formed enough to have a huge audience. Sorry for all the people reading this. And please, don't dig through the history...

Logic composability problems of lifecycle hooks in React

Suppose I have these components in my project:

class MessageHeader extends React.Component { /* ... */ }

class NiceButton extends React.Component { /* ... */ }

class FridgeContents extends React.Component { /* ... */ }
import React from 'react'
import revalidation from 'revalidation'
import gql from 'graphql-tag.macro'
import { filter } from 'graphql-anywhere'
import { curry } from 'ramda'
import { compose, withProps, withHandlers } from 'recompose'
import { graphql } from 'react-apollo'
import { Button } from '../common/styled'
import { getValue } from '../form/utils'
import { isRequired } from '../../utils/validation'

Demo: Coordinating async React with non-React views

Demo: Coordinating async React with non-React views

tl;dr I built a demo illustrating what it might look like to add async rendering to Facebook's commenting interface, while ensuring it appears on the screen simultaneous to the server-rendered story.

A key benefit of async rendering is that large updates don't block the main thread; instead, the work is spread out and performed during idle periods using cooperative scheduling.

But once you make something async, you introduce the possibility that things may appear on the screen at separate times. Especially when you're dealing with multiple UI frameworks, as is often the case at Facebook.

How do we solve this with React?

Setting Up

Let's make sure our Express app has the required base modules:

# within root of API
npm install --save express pg knex bcrypt
npm install --save-dev nodemon

FWIW: I (@rondy) am not the creator of the content shared here, which is an excerpt from Edmond Lau's book. I simply copied and pasted it from another location and saved it as a personal note, before it gained popularity on news.ycombinator.com. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the exact origin of the original source, nor was I able to find the author's name, so I am can't provide the appropriate credits.
