Twas the night before launch, when all through the server
Not a process was stirring, not even a crawler;
The init scripts were stored in rc.d,
In hopes that the sys admin soon would be free;
The Damon was nestled all snug in his bed,
While visions of multi-tenant architecture danced in his head;
And nginx all configured, and cap deploy at the ready,
The system was good to go and quite thread-heavy;
When at port 80 there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter;
Away to the console I flew like a flash,
Tore open ssh and dove right into bash;
The green on black cursor in my terminal box,
Betrayed the excitement of my poor /proc;
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a huge spike in traffic, from the blogosphere;
With a post on Mashable, Techcrunch and The Next Web,
I knew in a moment, the traffic wouldn't ebb;
More rapid than eagles the bots they came,
With malformed user agents and really fake names;
Now capify, now bundle, now init.d!
On nginx! On Unicorn! On MongoDB!
To the virtual image, to the limitless cloud!
Now fire up, fire up, wait for the crowd!
nginx proxied and Unicorn served,
The rubies they handled it, all memory reserved;
In just mere moments, the queues grew and grew,
And a few that failed, I had to manually redo;
But MongoDB never batted an eyelash,
Even thousands of queries, the disks never thrashed;
As the data flowed in I had no time to spare,
We filled customer's spreadsheets, in real-time, with great care;
With auto-scaling enabled and the load evenly spread,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
I spoke not a word, but went straight to my code,
For in 2011, even more apps will flow;
But as the tunes started rocking, I put a message on the site,
Happy Launchmas to all, and to all a good-night. |
