Great job, thanks! Besides dates of birth and death, a possible addition could be Nobel Prize-related dates (announcement or ceremony), such as the 1905 one which Henryk Sienkiewicz received for Quo Vadis.
Historical dates are another possibility, e.g., the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition left Plymouth on 8 August 1914. This expedition is described in South! by Ernest Shackleton.
@SzymonSzott - thanks for those excellent suggestions. I'll add the ones you mention, and do little more digging, especially on the Nobel Prize side. If you think of other "historical dates", do leave another comment here!
Some possible historical dates:
- Terra Nova Expedition - start: 15 June 1910, South Pole: 17 January 1912; described in The Worst Journey in the World
- Many possible dates related to Theodore Roosevelt, e.g., US president since September 14, 1901.
- Fall of the Roman Empire on September 4, 476 (emperor Romulus Augustulus abdicates).
- Any date related to the US Civil War (e.g., April 12, 1861) is related to the memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant and In the Midst of Life by Ambrose Bierce.
- Dates related to Charles Darwin, e.g., the Beagle set sail on 27 December 1831.
There are also publication dates, e.g., Moby Dick was published on October 18, 1851 (United Kingdom) and on November 14, 1851 (U.S.)
With all of our (Alexandre) Dumas père, surely he should be on here. :) Born 24 July 1802, died 5 December 1870.
Other authors we have a number of books from:
Baroness Orzcy (Scarlet Pimpernel), 23 September 1865 – 12 November 1947
Honoré de Balzac (The Human Comedy), 20 May 1799 – 18 August 1850
Maurice Leblanc (Lupin), 11 December 1864 – 6 November 1941
Theodore Dreiser, August 27, 1871 – December 28, 1945
Thomas Hardy, 2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928
Virginia Woolf, 25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941
George Bernard Shaw, 26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950
Edith Wharton, January 24, 1862 – August 11, 1937
Henry David Thoreau, July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862
Lucy Maud Montgomery (Ann of Green Gables), November 30, 1874 – April 24, 1942
These are significant because we have their entire short story collections and they're pretty well-known:
Anton Checkhov, 29 January 1860 – 15 July 1904
O. Henry, September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910
Guy de Maupassant, 5 August 1850 – 6 July 1893
@vr8hub Thanks for these, Vince - I'll get around to adding them to the calendar ... "soon"!
