Title: "The Rival's Reunion"
Cold Open | |
INT. AFC RICHMOND - LOCKER ROOM - DAY
The team is gathered in the locker room, preparing for practice. Ted Lasso enters with a mysterious letter in hand.
TED | |
Morning, everyone! Gather 'round, I've got something to share with y'all.
The players and coaching staff gather around Ted, curious about the letter.
TED (CONT'D) | |
I just received a letter from an old friend of mine, and it looks like we'll be playing his team in an exhibition match next week!
ROY | |
Who's this old friend of yours, Coach?
TED | |
His name is Mike "The Maverick" Mendoza. We go way back to our days coaching in the States. He's a great guy, but boy, do we have a history!
COACH BEARD | |
(under his breath) | |
The Maverick... | |
SAM | |
What's the story between you two, Coach?
TED | |
Well, Sam, Mike and I were always coaching rivals. Friendly, but competitive. Our matches were always intense, and the fans loved it. It was like watching two chess masters going at it.
JAMIE | |
(smugly) | |
So, what's the score, then? Who's the better coach?
TED | |
(laughs) | |
Now, Jamie, I like to think we each have our own unique coaching styles. But, I reckon we'll find out soon enough, won't we?
NATE | |
So what's the plan, Coach? How are we going to beat The Maverick?
TED | |
Oh, Nate, you know me. I think we'll just stick to our usual recipe: teamwork, biscuits, and a whole lotta heart.
As the team begins to disperse and prepare for practice, Ted turns to Coach Beard.
TED (CONT'D) | |
You remember our last game against The Maverick, right Beard?
COACH BEARD | |
(gravely) | |
I'll never forget it, Ted.
TED | |
Well, let's hope history doesn't repeat itself. Time to bring our A-game, my friend.
They exchange a determined look, and the scene fades to black.
CUT TO: | |
INT. AFC RICHMOND - PRACTICE FIELD - DAY
The team begins their practice session, ready to prepare for the big match.
David Laing: | |
Could you add more humor to the scene?

The team is gathered in the locker room, preparing for practice. Ted Lasso enters with a mysterious letter in hand.
TED | |
Morning, everyone! Gather 'round, I've got something to share with y'all, and no, it's not my secret biscuit recipe!
The players and coaching staff gather around Ted, curious about the letter.
TED (CONT'D) | |
I just received a letter from an old friend of mine, and it looks like we'll be playing his team in an exhibition match next week!
ROY | |
Who's this old friend of yours, Coach? Is he as friendly as you, or did you have a falling out over who had the better mustache?
TED | |
(laughs) | |
His name is Mike "The Maverick" Mendoza. We go way back to our days coaching in the States. He's a great guy, but boy, do we have a history! And for the record, my mustache is a national treasure.
COACH BEARD | |
(under his breath) | |
The Maverick... | |
SAM | |
What's the story between you two, Coach? Was it like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, or more like Batman and the Joker?
TED | |
Well, Sam, I'd say it's more like Tom and Jerry – always chasing each other, but deep down, we're pals. Our matches were always intense, and the fans loved it. It was like watching two comedians in a pie fight.
JAMIE | |
(smugly) | |
So, what's the score, then? Who's the better coach? And more importantly, who's got the better hair?
TED | |
(laughs) | |
Now, Jamie, I like to think we each have our own unique coaching styles. But, I reckon we'll find out soon enough, won't we? And let's not forget, it's not about the hair on your head; it's about the heart in your chest.
As the team begins to disperse and prepare for practice, Ted turns to Coach Beard.
TED (CONT'D) | |
You remember our last game against The Maverick, right Beard?
COACH BEARD | |
(gravely) | |
I'll never forget it, Ted. My beard hasn't been the same since.
TED | |
(mock seriousness) | |
That's right. We lost by a whisker. Time to bring our A-game, my friend.
They exchange a determined look, and the scene fades to black.
CUT TO: | |
INT. AFC RICHMOND - PRACTICE FIELD - DAY
The team begins their practice session, ready to prepare for the big match, with a mix of laughter and motivation.
David Laing: | |
One more time, with a bit more warmth and with the humor being around 20% more subtle.

TED | |
(chuckles) | |
His name is Mike "The Maverick" Mendoza. We go way back to our days coaching in the States. He's a great guy, but boy, do we have a history! And Roy, not everyone can pull off a mustache like this.
COACH BEARD | |
(under his breath) | |
The Maverick... | |
SAM | |
What's the story between you two, Coach? Are you two like friendly rivals?
TED | |
Exactly, Sam. We're like two friendly neighbors competing to see who can grow the best roses. Our matches were always intense, and the fans loved it. It was like watching two artists painting the same canvas.
JAMIE | |
(smirks) | |
So, what's the score, then? Who's the better coach? Or is this a battle of wits?
TED | |
(smiling) | |
Now, Jamie, I like to think we each have our own unique coaching styles. But, I reckon we'll find out soon enough, won't we? Remember, it's all in good fun.

COACH BEARD | |
(gravely) | |
I'll never forget it, Ted. That game taught us a lot.
TED | |
(nods) | |
That's right. It's time to take those lessons and bring our A-game, my friend.
They exchange a determined look, and the scene fades to black.
